Problem rescue USB made with Macrium Reflect

I have a recurring problem with making a backup rescue media on a USB. I have just used Macrium to make the rescue on a new USB stick as I understand that Microsoft will be phasing out it's system image & backup utilities.

I therefore made a Macrium rescue drive onto a brand new USB stick. On trying it out by rebooting my pc it boots up fine and dandy - all things get loaded. I then get a popup (see attached screenshot ) asking me about installing drivers. The problem is that I cannot click on anything because neither my mouse or keyboard is picked up when booting from this recovery drive etc. There's nothing wrong with the mouse or keyboard - they works fine when booted normally. I therefore have no way of navigating any further.

So, what could be the fault and how would I fix it??? Obviously, the rescue drive is useless to me if I can't get past this.

*** Is this any clue?? I tried booting up using a recue cd disk that I made ages ago using the Windows 10 backup options and both keyboard and mouse work fine, no problems.

    Hello @barryman,

[1] Are there ANY Yellow Triangles in Device Manager?
[2] Are WU's [ Windows Updates ] up to date?
[3] Have you checked the Manufacturers Website for NEW Device Drivers?

Are you using a USB 2 port or USB 3?

    Macrium rescue

I think mine are all USB 2.0 but, as I've said, all usb connected devices are working fine with existing system

Hi Paul - thanx for reply.

1, There are no device drivers anywhere with yellow warning - I checked all including as USB serial bus controllers. As I said in my post they are working 100% ok when I boot up in the normal way. They even work with the Windows repair disk etc so the system recognises them ok.

    2. All Win updates have been done.

    3. Haven't checked all the different manufacturers websites as they all work ok in normal bootup mode. It's just off the Macrium backup. I even tried doing a rescue disk on a different USB stick but same thing happens.

You don't have mouse or keyboard because your rescue drive needs USB drivers.
That is strange because this happens if you have USB 3.x ports. On a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 computer you should only have USB 2.0, unless you have installed a USB 3.x ports add on card.

Recreate the rescue drive and, when asked, install the drivers.

The default should be Windows RE and should have all the drivers from the OS.

    Macrium rescue USB

Following the kind suggestions above I have tried making new versions but have encountered the following:

    1. On the Macrium screen when using the wizard to create rescue, as per my original screenshots it shows Windows RE as the default. However, when booting up with the newly made rescue USB it says "initialising Windows PE"!

    2. How to I add any updated drivers to the existing Windows RE environment and then how do I make 100% sure Macrium initialises the RE version. Step by step please. I don't know how to navigate to the "Select Windows Image file toolset page

    3. Having tried booting USB a few times now when I boot up as normal I now get a screen asking me to choose between Windows 10 and Macrium Rescue. How do I remove whatever is causing this.

    4. I have tried making the rescue both with and without the checkbox for "Check for updated drivers. It makes no difference

I think if you can walk me through the initial Macrium setup it might solve the booting problem.

Again, all your help is much appreciated.

    From Macrium's online help file:
Adding device drivers to Windows PE - KnowledgeBase v7.2 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase - KnowledgeBase v7.2 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase

(More options in the left pane).

    Perhaps that will help.

This also covers updating drivers on the PE disk:

Guessing that you've added Macrium's boot option: see the manual: the option is presented in the second screenshot.
Adding a boot menu option for Reflect recovery - Knowledgebase 8.0 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase

    I searched the manual for
    boot option

    for you.

Note: we all have to learn programs we choose to use... Macrium has a huge searchable manual.

And you might get a useful hint if you ask Google nicely:

If it's creating a PE disk that means you have downloaded the option for Windows PE at one time and will always default to this.

On the 'Select Windows Image File Toolset' window ( see image I posted) click on Windows RE then click on OK. You should see a small loading bar appear quickly. It should now create a Windows RE base WIM. That should have the drivers from your system.
