Want to find File History Folder in order to trim

My C drive is shrinking (free space wise).

The bulk of it is File History.

I want to get there and do some pruning.

    What is the exact path?

File History should not be set to save backups to C drive if that lettered partition is the OS drive as it usually is

In fact File History will not normally let you select the OS drive

If the drive originally seleted is disonnected then file history will still save backups, and this case to your C drive but when
the backup drive is then reconnected they should be automatically returned to that drive and the files on the C drive deleted

as to cleaning file history see this
Delete Older Versions of File History in Windows 10

and as to the temp locations for files if the backup drive is disonnected see this
Select Drive for File History in Windows 10

I would also recommend you run a disk cleanup on C drive
Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10
OR use storage sense in settings

    Mac:

Thanks for your help, but no joy yet. I went to your how to delete old file history link. But when I tried to delete files I get the error:
"Could not clean up history data. Element not found."
Is there a way to get into the File History folder and delete what I want?

What makes you think the file history is ON - C drive
and have you tried the disk cleanup
and also going to file history which drive is shown as your history drive

IF it has taken space on C drive as mentioned in my first reply because the file history drive was not available then on disk clean up it will be seen as an item named
    User File History

You can only trim the File History folder while you have your File History drive connected. It is (almost) impossible to set up File History to save to your C: drive, so any build up of 'history' files on the C: drive are almost certainly a queue of files waiting to be transferred to your File History drive if it is ever reconnected.

You can delete these 'waiting' files by running Disk Clean up and clicking its 'Clean up system files' button.

Unless you can connect your original File History drive again, then they will start to build up again. If you do not know where it is, so cannot reconnect it, then it's probably best to turn off File History until you are in a position to set it up properly.

    more info

Mac: I used disk cleanup. No good.
My C drive has: 198 gb used and 38.9 free and it keeps shrinking. I don't have that much.
When I go to control panel/settings/storage I find that File History is taking up 58.8 gb.

    Also digging deeper I find:

    c:\FileHistory\myname\laptopname\data\c\users

File history seems to be saving everything I do.

If I put the cursor over myname I get the 58.8 GB.
If I right click myname I do have the option to delete. Not sure if it will work and I'm hesitant to do that. I backup regularly and also use onedrive so I would like to delete File History, or delete all the files and then jturn it off. I admit I'm a bit afraid to proceed.

    Suggestion?

If I clean up system files, will that cause other issues? There is no other disk. My one ext HD is used for backing up and it was used last night

I agree as I said in my first reply
If the drive originally seleted is disconnected then file history will still save backups, and this case to your C drive but when
the backup drive is then reconnected they should be automatically returned to that drive and the files on the C drive deleted
and explained further regarding user file history in my reply - post 4.

    compiler7

The first thing to do is to turn off file history
    then on the diskcleanup
run it as admin OR as Bree has suggested - clean up system files
    THEN you will see
    User File History

I suspect as I said that you have originally commissioned File History to another drive - external perhaps and then disconnected it so that File History is now saving to C drive

    NOTE
Selecting clean up system files will NOT cause a problem and will indeed more than likely allow other cleanups such as windows update temp files and other entries you will see

No. Cleaning up system files just does a more through clean up. None of the file Microsoft will allow you to clean up are strictly necessary. You can also use its 'More options' tab to delete all but the latest restore point, another hidden item that can use up a lot of disk space.

    nope...but

    Mac:

Nada. I had already run it as admin and cleaned system files (after turning off file history).
But previous to that I deleted %temp% to gain some more space. It did very little.
When I re-did disk cleanup, it said the recycle bin had I recall about 38gb. I looked in there and it was 95% the stuff I deleted from %temp%. I emptied the recycle bin via disk cleanup So now I am up to 70+ gb free space. So, that's a relief. With file history now turned off, things should be better.

HOWEVER, the problem still remains. File history is still 58 gb. I am afraid to delete any of the telescoping folders (it continues on and on). I can look at my image backups and look at the image sizes and maybe find when this started. I could restore from an earlier backup and add back my latest needed data, but I do not want to do all the updates. I understand your theory, but when I connected my only ext HD last night, those files would have been saved there, if that was the situation. That is the only ext. drive I use.

I am in the UK and must call it a day for now
    It is 0116
I am sure my colleague Bree will sort your problem for you

If by chance it is not sorted when I return about 1800hrs UK time I will of course continue.

IF you have now turned file history OFF
then when you restart the computer you MAY find that the recorded 58GB on file history has now gone.

Also as mentioned by Bree check the space being used by system restore.
