What is a File History drive?

    Hello,

I keep getting a pop up on my Windows 10 laptop that says:

Your File History drive was disconnected for too long.

What is a File History drive, and do I need to make any adjustments?

    Thank you

    Hello,

File History is a file backup feature in Windows.

If you do not use File History, you can turn it off below to stop getting this notification.

If you do use File History, then you can select a different drive below to save it to instead.

If you have turned on File History to back up your user files, then it will automatically continue to make backups as you make changes to your files. Sounds like you have previously used File History to back up to an external HDD. If so, then that drive needs to remain connected for File History to continue working.

You can use File History to automatically back up versions of your files on a schedule to a location you select to save to. You can select to save backups to an internal hard drive, externally connected drive (ex: USB drive), or you can save to a drive on a network. You can add, remove, and exclude folders to be backed up by File History.

Over time, you'll have a complete history of your files. If the originals are lost, damaged, or deleted, you can restore them. You can also browse and restore different versions of your files.
