formatted my USB to NTFS and Win10 says not usable for system image

    Win 20H2 Build 19042.1348
I have a 128G USB and I formatted it for NTFS. When I went to do a system image Win told me it was not a usable device. Do I need an external device? Thank you.

You need to format it as FAT32

    No FAT32 choice

Hi Ghot, The drop down list only had exFAT. Is that what I want?

I don't have an option FAT32 in the format list. I used exFAT and Win10 says it needs to be NTFS.

Last time I looked, it wont create images on usb stick. Not sure why, perhaps ms doesnt think that is reliable storage.

yes, or you can attach the backup disk internally if you have a spare sata port

Try Macrium Reflect (freeware) to create the systems image on a USB.

EDIT: P.S. For once I might agree with MS, a USB stick is not the most reliable device on which to store something as crucial as a systems image.

Looks like you have a 5.25. external bay. You could use one of these. They are very useful.

Or you can find them that will take 3.5 and 2.5 at the same time and still fit in the single 5.25 external.

Ditto... Only SSDs and Hard Disks with "anything else" than Windows backup.

I don't keep a lot of images (don't need to) but they're on an external SSD and I copy the most recent two to USB that way I have copies of the last couple backups.
