Use ACRONIS software to backup my system but it has failed me

    Hello,

Running Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, OS Build 19043.1288

I use Outlook for my e-mails. Earlier today it was slow in receiving my e-mails. Under Outlook I clicked on File and then Account settings. Clicked on the Repair tab and the process ran. I lost all of my user defined Mail folders.
Used this process in the past without any issues.

Tried to recover the .OST file for my user id but could not find it in my backup. Did a google search and saw that Acronis does not backup *.OST files. This raises the question of what else does it not backup.

What products do others use to backup their files. I am looking for a product that will backup all of my files no matter what the file is?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello Stu and welcome to TF

    Most of us here use
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

which backs up all user files to my knowledge.

Apparently you can make Acronis backup .ost files after you make a registry edit:

It seems that Macrium and probably most backup software, takes a "snapshot" of the system drive, then makes a backup of that.
This is where the problem with some Outlook files occurs.

One solution I just read about, involves only making the backup, from "outside" of Windows. You can do that by using Macrium's bootable rescue media. Again, I suspect, most backup software will have similar issues and solutions.

I haven't used Acronis in a while, but I would imagine, it still has bootable media, to use when you can't boot to Windows.
You might want to try making your backup, "using" that bootable media, rather than making the backup from within Windows.

I just Googled this, and two of the 2021 google results were .pdf files. These had the best explanations.

Does Macrium Reflect backup .OST files?

Short answer is that Outlook has local files and files stored on Microsoft's servers, and although backup software can restore Windows, Outlook seems to have a problem when the "dates" of the local files, don't match with the dates of the "non-local" (server) files.

When you restore from a backup that's like a week old... the dates of Outlook's local and server files...will no longer match.

Really short answer... it's not the backup software's fault. It's Outlook's fault.

    Hello.

Following the instructions in Acronis software: *.OST-file is not backed up | Knowledge Base
I now make backups of my *.OST files.
