    File History

Have tried File History in the past and it was well slow. Backing up to a NAS system the write speed was in the region of 200Mbps according to task manager. So the first backup took literally a couple of days!!

Reinstalled an old copy of Opps!Backup and the throughput was in the region of 800+Mbps as reported by TM.

Decided to try FH again as Opps!Backup is ultra long in the tooth. Thinking was that FH would have improved on it's write speed but nope - it's still as slow as molasses with that 200Mbps.

    Back to Opps!Backup and 800Mbps.

Cannot believe that MS have not improved the write performance. So is it something I'm doing wrong? - is there something in the settings I'm missing?

I would prefer to use FH but having an ultra large media collection.....

    Any input suggestions appreciated.

    - - - Updated - - -

An update (of sorts). Posted query to MS - the only response was how to get FH working again when it stops. Otherwise use Macrium. Why they would be suggesting a third party program when there should be a perfectly good one already in the OS is beyond me.

But that was not my question. It was regarding the ultra slow write speed of FH when other programs were 4-5 times faster.

So no help from MS. It would appear they simply do not know or if they do aren't saying.

So my conclusion is FH is better than nothing but if you require your media collection of (in my case) 8TB plus backed up to a NAS drive with history then look elsewhere.

    Hi,

I believe a big part of FH sluggishness comes from the fact it uses Windows Search services to index changes and also uses file content to do comparison.

If you are looking for a third party file sync software that's fast. Try FreeFileSync. Configured to use File Time and Size for comparison. It will run at good speed. It supports batch creation for unattended synchronization that can be scheduled. And also uses no resources while in standby.

Why they would be suggesting a third party program when there should be a perfectly good one already in the OS is beyond me.
Me too, but since the dawn of time, MS Backup solutions has sold way more Headache meds then recovered operating systems. But at least you received a sound suggestion to use Macrium

Thanks for responding. I use FreeFileSync from my main PC to the laptop and a good program it is. What I'm after is one that does not delete older files with newer ones. Occasionally I've obtained what I thought was a superior recording only to find out that was not the case. So going back in time to find the original to restore has been brilliant.

A 'normal' backup would have overwritten the old (but required) file. I may play around with Macrium as I use it to back up the system anyway.

Agree 100% about the headache meds - all MS did was to suggest how to get FH working which it already was then in the same sentence suggested Macrium - go figure me on that one.

While FH works very well I wouldn't expect it to get speeds near other can...

BTW FreeFileSync supports full versioning with time stamps and Min / Max caps.

    And it's really fast.

Good thinking - thank you and I hadn't delved into the other settings. All I would need to do is schedule a daily start time.

    Again - many thanks

    Thanks for replying.

Make sure your Versioning folder is located on your NAS. in the same Mapped drive than your backup ( Side by Side... will result in faster file moves ). Then save your job as a Batch. And give it a try.

    Best of luck !!!
