    Macrium 5 question

Since I am a "cheap" Free User of Macrium, they wouldn't let me post a question on their Forum. I just bought a new HP WIN10 Laptop. I am using a Seagate ITB portable external hard drive to back up. It was full of old computer stuff, so I Formated it. I can back up using the IMAGE command but I can not back up using the CLONE command. The error message is "Not sufficient space". Not true. D: drive shows 208GB of 237GB available after the IMAGE backup. What am I doing wrong?

What is the size of the original drive that you are attempting to clone to that drive? The destination drive must be as large, or larger, than the source drive. It doesn't matter how much data is on the disk, it could be 2 bytes, a clone operation still requires the destination to be at least as large as the source.

I am afraid this is not true.

You can clone to a smaller drive but there must be enough space to fit the stored data from the source drive. It is easier to do with V8 of Reflect but can also be done with V7.

OP can download the trial version and use that. After 1 month, this reverts to the free version if OP does not want to buy a licence.

To clone, you need to create free unallocated space to clone to. OP needs to provide more information showing partitions, free space, unallocated space of host drive and drive to be cloned, so we can advise how to do it.

Thanks for the correction, cereberus. The Macrium 8 feature list touted the ability to clone to a smaller sized disk as a feature; I made the assumption that this was new functionality in 8.

To tell you the truth, I never use clone. I just restore an image.

You could also do it in V7 but a little trickier as the recovery partition kind of gets in the way. You have to drag and drop partitions in a slightly different order so C drive partition is last one and then it is resized automatically.

With V8 it is easier as you can float the recovery partition to right so unallocated space is in middle, then when you drag C partition it is automatically resized.

    I probably don't get it

The C: drive on the laptop says: 888GB free of 953GB
The D: drive (Seageate external hard drive) says 208GB free of 237GB
What I don't understand is the D: Seagate which is supposed to be 1 TB, yet when I click on it, it only says 208GB free of 237GB

Do I need a 2 TB to back up to??

Post an image of your disk partitions from disk management.
