    EaseUS todo backup opinions

    Hi,

I am using todo on a laptop connected to a dock. I have an external HD connected to the dock; Toshiba 500Gb platter drive. I leave it plugged in.
I am backing up certain files from the LT and todo is creating proprietary .pbd backups. For the record, it creates 3 and deletes the oldest so it can create a new one. 133Mb backups. This is done nightly.

I assume that if needed I can use todo to restore a backup but how does that work? I will only need the backup if the LT HD crashes. I want to make sure I'm not putting myself at risk here.

I do back up to another HD once a month or so and that is basically dragging and dropping certain folders on to the HD which is then stored elsewhere.

I know Macrium is a big favorite here.

Honestly...I thought todo was going to take the files I selected and was going to copy them to the external HD, not create a backup file, which is why I did not use Macrium. I have used Macrium and I remember it doing what todo does, which is create one file.

Todo is an imaging program, not a file backup program. Imaging programs created inage files which are basically like a zip file (lots of files in a single file).

They are more geared to backing up OS and programs rather than data (but you can backup data).

File backup programs usually data in an uncompressed format, often appending extra info in name such as date often in virtual real time i.e. if yiu change a file, it is backed (to a schedule you choose).

You can do incremantal and differential backups with Easuse but the incremental/differential backups are also compressed.

I've been using todo for about five years or so. Just upgraded to 13.5, and it works very well. My computer is encrypted with Veracrypt, and todo backs up everything I need it to without decrypting or changing any settings. Todo worked just as good with Bitlocker as well, never needed to suspend encryption. The best part is how it restores the computer right back to it's original condition.
