    Cloning creates a bootable drive.
All you need to do is amend the bios boot order.
The latest available Macrium user guide is 7.2 ,from their site.Page 139 is relevent.

There is one free way to hardware check that new HDD -- HardDisk Sentinel. While it will not verify that the OS is AOK, it will verify the sectors on the new HDD are all AOK, or, it will alert you if there are any problems with any sectors.

Alternative to cloning is image > restore image.

Plenty of posts in multiple forums on the 'net about cloning problems .. far less posts with imaging problems.

In your case, cloning suggests a degree of immediacy - i.e. you're going to/wanting to use the new disk straight away? Best way to test/check - use it either in the device (no way to avoid this method) or connect it externally via USB enclosure and boot from it (need to select/change boot BIOS order).

Cloning is not imaging, to which those links refer.

The Macrium viBoot feature lets you boot an image file into a virtual PC. You can also mount any image file as a virtual drive and peruse the contents.
