That may be so in theory (but a lot of the theory is very old, and applies to older-style MFM HDDs and the like). In practice, in this case, it would require (i) the would-be author to develop malicious intent, or pass the laptop on to someone who has that, (ii) the tecnical capability, and (iii) an expectation of useful 'pickings' - a worthwhile financial return.

Thanks everyone. In the end - and to get the job done - I created myself an admin profile on the laptop so was able to delete the original user’s profile. I’ve deleted any stray folders and installed a free word processing program.

For some reason, I couldn’t run CCleaner on the laptop, even though I copied it from a thumb drive.

Hoping the new owner will look at installing Linux, although it seems he isn’t interested in going online at all. I’m pretty sure he will just write his book and not be interested in developing any malicious intent.

Excellent news, and you are VERY welcome.

You need to install CCleaner or use the Portable version => CCleaner - Portable

If it is ALREADY installed [ and you have the correct settings ], then try this . . .

[1] Open an Elevated CMD Prompt [ Administrative ] by pressing the Win + X keys together and selecting Command Prompt (Admin).
[2] Type the below Command in the Elevated CMD Prompt and press Enter.

    Code:

    cd %ProgramFiles%\CCleaner & Start CCleaner64.exe /auto

You might need to change the above if it is for 32-bit.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks. I copied CCleaner from the thumb drive to the laptop but it just wouldn’t open to install.

Have you got the correct Bit version?

To find which Bit version the computer is, click Settings > System > About.

If it is for 32-bit, you will need to run the CCleaner.exe file . . .

    . . . NOT the CCleaner64.exe file

    I hope this helps.

Go to the CCleaner builds page https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

Download 'CCleaner - Portable (Zip file, no installer)'. Unzip it to a folder or a usb, you can run it from there without needing to install. It contains both CCleaner.exe (the 32-bit one) and CCLeaner64.exe.

I did that but when I try to run it, it says CCleaner.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I hope you got it direct from download.ccleaner, if not (or if others need the XP version) there's a link for the portable version of v5.64 (last to support XP/Vista) here...
