Cloning a large drive to a smaller drive,

I have a 1 Terabyte drive that I want to clone to a 500 gig M2 SSD. Would it be better if I split that drive in half to 500gig. The C drive would be a 500 gig partition and the other 500 would be a separate partition. I would then just clone the C drive partition to the SSD. The C drive is where my windows 10 is at. I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 21H1 OS build 19043.1055

If you want the target disk to boot, you need both the system and boot partitions as a minimum.Depending on your configuration, it is possible that one partition is both system and boot, but that is unlikely.

There are various programs that will do a system migration, many of them are free. There are plenty, diskgenius, aomei partition assistant, and many more - another is in the video below. Most can migrate to a smaller disk and adjust partition sizes for you if the used space on the source isnt too big to fit.

You can do this with Macrium Reflect (I just did it myself a couple days ago), and you can clone the 1TB to a 500GB as long as there is less than 500GB of data on the 1TB drive. Macrium will also verify the clone for you, and if there are any issues after it's finished, it has an option to "fix boot" as well.

For OPs benefit, you can do it with V7 but there is a manual element needed to do it. V8 does it automatically. OP could download trial version of V8 which reverts to free version after 30 days of OP does not wish to pay the one off licence fee.
