Matrium Reflect vs. System Volume Information (Solved)

For the past few days, when backing up the D:\ (data drive), Macrium posts a warning, which the log shows that while the backup was successful, the System Volume Information in the D:\ drive cannot be copied. I don't know how long that folder may have been there, as I normally have my D:\Documents folder open. I do go to D:\ from time to time to access non-document entries, but never paid any attention to the presence of the SVI folder if it were even there. There is a SVI folder on C:\ and another on K:\, an external USB hard drive.

How do I either get rid of the SVI on D:, or get Macrium to revert to ignoring that folder?

Hi, try to gain some understanding of what that folder is:
What Is the “System Volume Information” Folder, and Can I Delete It?

Having read that, do you think it should normally be visible to you, and do you think it would be a good idea to delete it?

To help respondents, please post the exact error message received as a screenshot and as text so it can be used for searching. Thanks.

Yes, I have read the information about the folder, which is visible as I have marked Show Hidden Folders, so that I can access app data.

    The text is :

    Copying files
    Error Reading:
D:\System Volume Information\8{3808876b-cl76-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752> Access is denied.

As this just started, I have concluded that it is a Macrium Reflect problem, and as I have just installed the paid version of version 8, I have the standard one-year support, so I am going to contact Macrium to fid out what they have to say about this. I will report my findings.

Not necessarily. I too have Reflect v8 and have seen no such problem.

Every partition will have a System Volume Information folder, hidden and protected from viewing. You can however see its contents in TreeSizeFree run as an administrator. You should see that only the SVI folder on C: has files of any significant size, those for the system restore points. Files and folders you may find on any drive's SVI folder include ChkDsk logs and indexing files.

Your D:\System Volume Information\8{3808876b-cl76-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752> file name appears similar to a restore point's file name. It may be corrupted, you should try running ChkDsk /F on your D: drive. You could also try configuring System Protection for the D: drive, deleting any system restore points, or just turning it off. There's no real benefit in having system protection on any drive other than you C:\ system drive.

There will be an SVI folder on every formatted drive, even a USB flash stick formatted as Fat32. There at least there's no security permissions to stop you exploring its contents.

Thanks for the very interesting report. I just checked, System Protection for D:\ is turned off; as I did not do that, I have to assume that it has always been off. Nonetheless, I clicked to remove any system restore entries; this reported that all such files were removed. Rather hard to remove that which is not there, but perhaps they were there anyway. This evening's scheduled backup will indicate if the problem has been fixed; either way, I will report the result.

In my original post, I asked "How do I either get rid of the SVI on D:, or get Macrium to revert to ignoring that folder?"

One reply was that "D:\System Volume Information\8{3808876b-cl76-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752> file name appears similar to a restore point's file name", which rather ignored the very file name given in the Log error information.

To conclude, as I suspected, the error was in Macrium Reflect Version 8. Early this morning, I updated to Build 5928; the notes about this build included this text, "File and Folder backups could incorrectly report access denied for some files when backing up. This has been resolved."

I am not sure why my backup just ran, but it did, and as expected, the report that System Volume Information could not be copied is not in the log of that backup, nor did the notification include the word "Warning".

    Problem solved, thread marked solved.

@dalchina -- I'm a Windows 7 person, I thought SVI also contains SRPs, System Restore Points, is W10 SVI the same? I thought MR6 & MR7 routinely did not copy SVI/SRPs, does MR8 do any different?

It depends... (and I can only presume it applies similarly for MR8):
Why a Cloned or Restored file system has less used space than the source - KnowledgeBase v7 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase - KnowledgeBase v7 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase

The same appears referenced starting from the v8 knoweldge base.
