System Restore Point Keeps Growing

Creating images with Macrium has no effect on restore points in my experience.
Just for interest I have


I use Ccleaner to clean a range of folders/cookies/files occasionally (but not the registry) and again it has no effect as configured.

When you have observed the (same?) restore point growing in size, have you also noted the date it was created- is there any change in that?

Try using System Restore Explorer to mount and thus view the contents of your problem restore point.


Save a screenshot.
Repeat when you believe it's grown and compare.

What difference do you see?

I struggle to understand how the same saved restore point can grow.
How are you determining its size?

Did you ever get anywhere with Shadow Explorer to ascertain what is the apparent growth in the RP

The size can be obtained by clicking on System protection then on the System Properties window click on the drive letter (C) then click on configure (the same window where the Max usage is set). Since this morning it increased from 8.57GB to 8.61GB.

That's current usage - for all System Restore points, not an individual one.
You need to show both the list of restore points and the size at the same time.

I'v not seen clear evidence of one single restore point growing in size here.

I don't see the point of System Restore so have turned it off and rely on Macrium Reflect. I can recover from a Reflect backup in under 10 minutes.

Not sure how that helps to deal with the question.

System Restore
a. does not affect user data whereas restoring a partition restores EVERYTHING to a previous date.
b. is faster and easier to use.

If your image is a week old, and you restore it, then all changes to personal data on the partition(s) restored made in that week are lost.

I see the two as complementary, noting SR may not always restore successfully.

My personal data is on a separate partition and backup up daily with Reflect and hourly by File History. I'll probably do more frequent backups when Reflect v8 is released.

For you then that may be true- but that requires discipline, understanding, planning and is atypical of users in general.
