Here's what I think is the original source on tenforums:
    Can't enable System Restore

The outcome of each command- and whether it is necessary- will depend on what already exists on your system of course.

This is what I have in those two:
    Attachment 332641Attachment 332642

    - and as you can see, System Restore is working on mine.

That's not to say there cold be some other problem of course. For example, System Restore depends on VSS. You may need to run a VSS repair. Macrium Reflect includes a utility to do that.
    @dalchina

    Thanks for the speedy response.

    Firstly, the third command:

    • reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP\Clients" /v " {09F7EDC5-294E-4180-AF6A-FB0E6A0E9513}" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "1" /f

would running this command simply overwrite what is already there?

Secondly, I opened Macrium and couldn't find the VSS Repair - even using help. Is this in Macrium itself or on the Macrium website? If so, a link would be great In the meantime, I'll Google 'VSS REpair' and see what I can find.

UPDATE 3: Acronis provide a free tool to repair the VSS

    https://www.acronis.com vss-doctor/

As Acronis are reliable (I used True Image for years), I think I may try this first. What do you think?

The following website had 9 possible solutions (!)

    Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (VSS)Troubleshooting

    and this website:

    How-to-reinstall-or-fix-volume-shadow

had a procedure to follow to on how to Reinstall or Fix Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service

Thanks for all of your help thus far - much appreciated!

Did you enable it for the C: drive first?
The OS is on C: and the documents etc are on W:

Doh! I didn't think of that!

I'll see what happens when I try to enable it for C:

UPDATE: I can't believe that I tried to enable System Restore for a drive that wasn't the System Disk!

Sometimes it is the simplest of things!

Just need to set a restore point now (after the 'Sleep' issue has been resolved).

    Thanks Chrysalis

    *blushes*

Thanks - should have had more of a look through Macrium and 'Other Tasks' makes sense.

Bizarrely, both sleep and restart are now working fine *shrugs*

UPDATE 2: I guess I spoke too soon - sleep not working again.

    Cheers

No worries, what was going on is that the volume shadow copy feature on consumer windows is only used under the guise of system restore, and of course since the system resides on C: then enabling it on the C: drive is a requirement to make system restore points.

You can still enable it for data drives as well such as your W: drive, its just that C: has to be enabled for the feature to work at all.
