System Restore - 'Turn on System Restore' is Greyed Out

Hi folks, a couple of wierd problems...

First, pc is not going to sleep when button pressed. It was doing so until the last couple of days which prompted me to run sfc/ scannow. Sfc found some file corruptions and repaired them. This didn't fix the issue however.

So, I thought about doing a System Restore (which brings me to the second problem).

System Restore is turned off!



When I go to configure System Restore only to find that when I go to System Properties > System Protection Tab and click on 'Configure' :



The 'Turn on System Protection' option under 'Restore Settings' is greyed out. It cannot be clicked on.



So, I ran GPEDIT.msc, navigated to Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> System Restore and I looked for a setting which said “Turn Off System Restore”.

I double-clicked this and selected “Disabled”.



System restore is still greyed out.

Ran regedit.exe looking for the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore.

so that I could delete the values in DisableConfig and DisableSR

However, the key did not exist :



Do I have to create the keys and then set their values to zero??

So, any ideas about how to (a) Get System Restore up and running and (b) sort out the sleep problem (I'll take answers on the System Restore issue first if I may).

PC spec is as per listed under 'System One' in 'My Computers'. OS was a clean install of Windows 10 Pro.

Tried to run %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation from an elevated Command Prompt after checking that Volume Shadow Copy was running



but got the following error:



Still stuck.

Try setting it to 'Not Configured'. Doing so will delete all the keys this policy uses. Restart then see if that helps.....

Hi Bree, thanks for the quick reply.

System Restore was already set to 'Not Configured' in the Group Policy Editor.

Have updated the original post with something else I've tried.

UPDATE:

Okay - tried restarting pc (which it did okay as recently as a couple of hours ago) but it hung again whilst restarting (just like it does when going to sleep).

Restart didn't fix the System Restore issue either!

Already looked at that.



It is the last part of that link that is proably most appropriate however as under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT there is NO System Restore stub (so these keys can't be deleted)

As far as adding "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP\Clients" /v " {09F7EDC5-294E-4180-AF6A-FB0E6A0E9513}" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "1" /f

do I need to enter all of the above (including the {09F7EDC5-294E-4180-AF6A-FB0E6A0E9513}" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "1" /f part) and is it entered EXACTLY as shown aboe (including all the quotes & spaces)?

Copy and paste each command in turn from the article (rather than typing them) and run each from an admin command prompt.

Suggest taking due precautions when running scripts from an arbitrary source, making sure you have a way to reverse them or recover from their effect.

In that case, first enable it, the set it back to 'Not Configured'. If something else has set the registry settings then it may not necessarily show up as 'enabled' in gpedit, as this member just found out.

Okay, that's odd.

Went into GPEDIT.msc, --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> System Restore.

“Turn Off System Restore” was 'Disabled'. Set it to 'Enabled' and then back to 'Disabled' and pc restarted to see if it had any effect.

UPDATE 1: - Nope - still greyed out!

If not, will try resetting to 'Not Configured' and will update this post after that.

UPDATE 2: - Still greyed out.

I ran an elevated Command Prompt and entered the first two lines into RegEdit:

• reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore" /v "DisableSR" /f

The operation completed successfully

• reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore" /v "DisableConfig" /f

ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registrykey or value

I haven't yet run the third command:

• reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP\Clients" /v " {09F7EDC5-294E-4180-AF6A-FB0E6A0E9513}" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "1" /f

... as there was already a key and value here:



Do I simply run that third command to overwrite what is already there??

Just wondering about the key above this in GPEDIT:



There are three options for 'Turn off Configuration': 'Not Configured', 'Enabled' and 'Disabled'. Would changing the key from 'Not Configured' have any effect?

Here's what I think is the original source on tenforums:
Can't enable System Restore

The outcome of each command- and whether it is necessary- will depend on what already exists on your system of course.

This is what I have in those two:

- and as you can see, System Restore is working on mine.

That's not to say there could be some other problem of course. For example, System Restore depends on VSS. You may need to run a VSS repair. Macrium Reflect includes a utility to do that.
