Macrium: image and restore to smaller drive

Hey all,

First-time poster and also new to Macrium. I have a 1TB M.2 SSD in my laptop that I want to image, transfer to another computer, and then I want to restore the image to a smaller (500GB) replacement M.2 drive.

I'm working with only 1 M.2 slot, so I created a Macrium recovery drive. My plan was to save the image in my secondary storage drive, boot from the recovery drive, then restore the image to the (smaller) replacement SSD.

I guess my question is: am I going to have issues trying to restore the image to a smaller drive?

You shouldn't................unless the occupied space of the imaged partitions on the original 1 TB drive was larger than the 500 GB capacity of the new drive.

Did you confirm it is properly activated?

I'm not sure if that would necessarily work without issues if moving to a new PC, rather than restoring to a new drive in the same PC.

Is it a retail Windows license?

This is a restoring to new drive in the same PC scenario, and...Windows seems to be activated. It's weird, the way I always check is to go to This PC -> Properties and when I do, it doesn't say anything about Windows being activated. I just have an icon that says "Copy."

When I go to Activation settings, however, it says it's activated to a digital license linked to my Microsoft account. This is a Dell laptop, so not a retail Win 10 license, it should be an OEM license that came with the computer.

Can't say I've ever heard of that...........but it could be normal and just not reported around here.
