How do you know the warranties are that long?

Western Digital external drives have 1, 2, 3, or 5 year warranties depending upon the model.
For example the warranties for the drives I have are:
My Book: 3 years
Elements: 2 years

Seagate supposedly has similar warranty periods.

However, the two Seagate external drives I have have very short warranties.
Expansion Desktop 2TB (Purchased: 04/19/2014) Warranty Expired: July 20, 2014
Expansion Desktop 5TB (Purchased: 04/25/2015) Warranty Expired: June 23, 2016

BTW, the Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB is still working after 7 years but has a very annoying feature. Even when new it failed the Seagate Seatools for Windows diagnostic program. I verified this feature with two other identical drives that also failed the diagnostic. Seagate support was never able to explain this.

Download the GPARTED ISO and make a bootable usb drive. Boot GPARTED and choose data recovery -- The interface is very like standard Windows partition managers.

GParted -- A free application for graphically managing disk
device partitions

For example :



GPARTED handles pretty well all types of file systems including NTFS and is of course Free software.

It's true that cracking the case on an external drive will void the warranty but if the warranty period has passed then there is nothing to lose.

I have been buying hard drives for 30 years. Every one of them has been sealed from dust. There is absolutely no harm from dust by opening an external drive enclosure as long you are careful in opening it. However, if you try to open the drive itself outside a clean room you will break the seal. Dust will probably destroy the drive the first time it is powered on.

BTW, external drives you buy have drives inside that are mostly the same as those inside computers. The main purpose of the enclosures is to protect the exposed electronic connections not protect the drives from dust.

I just watched that video of opening the hard drive case. It's not the same type of external HD as mine. The video one looks like a typical internal HDD with a simple plastic casing around it. The vid was from 2013 so that might be why.
Mine is a Seagate Back-up Portable. It was manufactured in 2018.
