For some reason in some files I have such as previous backups off scripts, it shows two files made this morning and one a day before in the morning. It's showing previous files for others as well, where it goes there I have no idea as it's a clean backup. When I try to view them via previous history and clicking "Open in File History" it won't open File History to view them. So they're corrupted, what's confusing me is how they exist in the first place. If I view the file in properties says it's location is in "\\localhost\C$\@GMT-2021.03.28-11.49.09\Users\nixed\Documents"

It sounds like you have multiple file history snapshots within same FileHistory folder.

This can happen if you change Windows user account, reinstall OS and similar, reuse same account name etc.
Not all files can be previewed in file history, it depends on file extension. ex. binary files can't be shown.

but if file history preview window doesn't show up itself, that could be anything not just file history issue.
maybe some files were put into quarantine by AV and are no longer available etc etc.

A rule of thumb is to never modify FileHistory folder on your own, and never reuse Windows account name.
Only files backed up by current account can be viewed in current account AFAIK.
the rest is just a backup.

By view I mean I click Open in File History and it won't attempt to preview them, it can't preview or display some files that's understandable. But not being able to attempt to preview them is unusual.
I'm using a brand new File History folder, I deleted all the old backup foldeder so there shouldn't be any old ones.
EDIT: Just got the Error Code 200 in Event Viewer again, now it wont backup anything again lol

See if "Option 1" from tutorial below helps to get rid of ghost files:

Thanks you, I found the C$ location it appears to be under Network. I'm going to try to clear all the old files are there all under differently named folders which I can view in file explorer.

When File History has problems, I reset it as follows:
    1. Stop FH
    2. Delete the FH configuration files at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration
    3. Restart FH and select to use the same backup drive as before

Problem is for me if I try to delete the config files it says some of them are in use, and stopping drive gives me the 0x80070020 error. Is it just Config1 and Config2 you delete? Or all the files in the config folder?

Try stopping the file history service as well as turning off file history. I just deleted the Config1 & Config2 files but you can try deleting all. Restart the PC after making these changes before you restart file history.

I'll keep it in mind thanks! But when I try stopping File History it gives me the error but doing it via the advanced settings for File History seems to have more luck so might be the way to go. Hopefully I don't get any error 200 sometime soon :)

I have a very similar problem, and want to re-initialise FH to start a completely new backup

FH failed on me when it found an Apple Mac file that had an invalid character in the filename
The FH log identified the full file path. I've since removed the file, and don't think there are any more
My back up config is just the standard libraries.

Right now I'm getting the following error

    File History Error 200 Every 2 Days?-image.png

I got this after taking the following steps

    Settings Backup switched OFF
    Stopped the FH service
Deleted from %APPDATA% the entire Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory folder
Deleted the entire backup FH Folder from the external drive
Rebooted & checked FH service still stopped

Used Control Panel \ File History to select a drive
It showed the correct drive, but there was no "Copying for the first time..." message
There was no Run Now message either
I examined the FH Backup folder and found that the Data folder was empty.
There was no disk activity either

Used Select Drive again to choose another drive, that seemed to work
Response as expected with Run Now, but on click got the error message above

I have previously tested creating a new User, with just a few files in Docs
This seems to work perfectly in the new dummy account.
I have backed up, updated and restored, all as expected

How do I get FH to believe it's being run for the first time in my real user account?
I've been struggling with this on and off for weeks, and will really appreciate some help.
