You need to confirm that the PC will boot WITHOUT the HDD.
The standard way to do that is to disconnect it and attempt to boot. Maybe you can. Maybe you can't.
You don't want to just assume it can boot without the HDD.
If that works, then reconnect the HDD and do as you wish with it.
