Regarding thread title it looks like misunderstanding, "File history" is not Windows backup, if you want to restore files from file history you would use "previous versions" by right clicking on file of interest, example screenshot:

Windows 7 backup available in Windows 10 is the one that is no longer maintained, and the reason why is MS OneDrive cloud, you get 5GB free which is enough for a lot of documents and pictures, for additional space you need to $$

Subjective what's better and depends on how much you need to back up, but OneDrive is surely better in that you keep all your backup with a single password on a paper, while external hard drives can get damaged, stolen, etc..

Seems like I'm not the only one who's "misunderstood", but really I don't think either Bastet or I has misunderstood the difference between Windows Backup and File History.

Incidentally, Windows Backup is using File History:

    > feel free to ignore my advice to move to other software & continue to use Windows backup

    Already doing that.

Windows Backup is working fine. The original issue was restore from the previous hard drive's backup, which was originally using Windows 7 upgraded to 10, which may have had something to do with the problem (also there were a lot of old decrepit files in there, maybe some sort of corruption or malware somewhere, who knows), and the new hard drive was a fresh install of 10 (and my original OEM just worked, thankfully). So I circumvented the restore problem by just plugging in the original hard drive through USB and moving files and folders over from their original spot. No problem with Windows Backup yet.

Anyway, the current backup settings appear to make sense. They're a backup of my files and folders (I just left it at the default because it looked fine) using file history. I'm completely OK with this.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft will let me know when that will be stop being supported, and I of course wouldn't lose any files anyway because they're just a backup. Just saying "it's being deprecated" doesn't really mean anything when it comes to backed-up files. I still have the source files.

OK I did find the "System Image Backup (SIB) Solution" and "We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors." text on that page, regarding version 1709, thank you. I'll continue using Windows Backup until I need to use something else, as it appears to be adequate right now.

Regardless, I expect any backup solution could have just as many problems just as often as Windows backup, but maybe you disagree.

File history is nothing new, it was there since Windows 7 (and maybe even before I forgot), and since there was also real "Windows backup" in addition to "file history", I think that's enough to see these 2 things are not the same thing, because why would there be 2 different things to do the same thing??

Also they work differently, for example file history only cares about "personal files" while Windows backup did much more.

What exactly are the “personal” files?

You missed what I said; I wasn't unclear on Windows Backup and File History being two different things. I stated that I and Bestat both appear to know they're two different things even though his statement (the way he worded it) appears to contradict that (I know with his previous words that he also knows the difference).

So please stop making statements based on thinking that I don't know the difference.

My issue was trying to restore the backup, all the weird errors I was getting, and I just wasn't clear what I was supposed to do based on what Windows was showing me.

Anyway, I've known the difference between Backup (folders and files + optional image) and File History (updating versions of folders and files) since I read about it with Windows 7 years ago. This is a completely moot point.

Regardless, when I become aware that I can't use Windows Backup anymore (regardless of how it's doing it, such as using File History), then I'll use something else. No attempt to make someone feel ashamed for doing this is necessary.

apologies, my whole point was that you'll find only "personal files" in that backup made by file history, and I'm not aware of any automated retrieval of files except using "previous versions" tab. that's all.
