Restore Registry Backup With PC Not Booting

    Windows 10 (64Bit)

If a PC's registry is backed up to a USB flash drive and after messing with the registry, for some reason, it won't boot normally. How do you restore the registry's backed up image? If I run a LiveCD (USB), that will only run with the portable Windows. The host's registry will not be seen, right?
    Cheers

You can boot off of a Live USB and start the Command Prompt, you then find which drive letter the Windows drive is on, it may have changed during Recovery, and restore the registry backup in the command prompt.
If you created an Image file of your computer previously using Macrium Reflect or your favorite cloning software, you can just restore the image and be done with it

Registry backup is disabled starting from version Windows 1803. If you have restore points you can use System Restore tool from Windows Recovery Environment.

Depends how you backed it up. If your backup is hives, you can navigate from your booted media to the windows installation on your hard disk, look in \windows\system32\config folder and replace them.

I have done it many times.

For those who don't already know:

A simple way to back up the hives is with a tiny free program called regbak Acelogix Software - Downloads

I am a "Backupper", especially since I upgraded to SSDs, backup takes about twenty minutes maximum will all the "heavy duty" apps I have on my system. I use AOMEI Backupper and Macrium Reflect. Since space is not an issue, I do two backups of each app and have current rescue USBs of each which are updated every time the app updates.

Before I posted my question, I restored the image and moved on. Also, I usually have the images on an external drive though my OS SSD is a stand-alone drive with no partition.

One thing I did last week was image the system drive, and also cloned it to a similar drive which came out very handy for me.

You're best and safest bet is the System Image backup and restore, regardless of app choice (I use Macrium....). That way, you're assured of getting every byte, nibble and bit. Multiples as you do, me too, are a wise choice.

I could backup the registry in my current Windows though.

For some reason, am not much of a fan of the windows "Repair" section. I have seen the Restore Point section but have not been able to use it. Good point though. Thank you.

True! But you can Re-Enable It. "Enable Automatic Registry Backup in Windows 10"

If you don't want to do it manually you can "Download Enable Automatic Registry Backup in Windows 10"

And then I think you'd need to repeat that after any upgrade... after you'd decided whether it's really useful, given it's probably only helpful when you can't boot specifically because of registry corruption, for example.

That's when the .reg file would come in handy. Note that it comes with Enable and Disable.
