I was trying to make it KISS but still redundant after which I copy incremental on one and differential to another external disk and each has one copy of full backup too.
That's because I'm not clear which kind of backup would be more beneficial and then use only that.
What do you guys do ?

TBH, a full backup only takes less than 3 mins on my pc, so I rarely bother with diffs. I just do an inc before installing something liable or messing with registry or bcd, so I can quickly revert. I find this much faster (RDR) and more reliable than crappy system restores.

In the end, each user has to decided what works for them.

I think it's done that way to keep the incremental chain as short as possible. I do a full each Saturday and differentials all other days. I only use incrementals for "out of band" backups such as after Windows Updates so my incremental chain is nearly always just the one.
I have never had an inc chain fail on me, so I rarely do diffs - they just waste space. I pragmatically accept if a chain fails, I only go back a week at most to the last full. Of course, I do not store data on C drive, or else it just keeps growing making the reflect backups growing. I backup data by different means - image tools are (imo) not the best solution for data.

    Hi there

Two different strategies needed here -- 1 for the OS itself and another for DATA backup and archiving.

For DATA backup - imaging is not the best tool for the job -- especially if you backup data to a NAS -- simply mount the Windows directory where your data is stored and run rsync (or its GUI - grsync) on the NAS (assuming Linux type NAS systems) -- don't forget though data on NAS should be backed up as well !!! .

For the OS imaging via Macrium works fast and efficiently and doesn't take long on reasonable PC's.

Whether or not you need the extra features the paid version of Macrium V8 has over the Free V7 version is of course up to you - but data archiving and backup etc should be treated differently to backing up the OS. You should try and have as little as possible on the OS partition, minimising any user data on it.

Things like music files probably only need to be backed up initially as those things don't change a lot if at all. Tools like rsync (and its GUI grsync) have all sorts of options for only backing up changed / new files etc and work very fast if your LAN connections are OK.

I also BTW send the Windows OS image to the NAS after backing up on Windows. I keep about 5 copies which I've found is usually more than sufficient.

With decent cheap large HDD's these days there really is no excuse for people NOT to backup OS and data. For really critical data one could also consider CLOUD storage -- One Drive and Google drive offer a reasonable amount cheaply while OFFICE/365 subscribers get a substantial amount of free cloud storage anyway.

    Cheers

I bought a 4-pack of Macrium 7 Home before Macrium 8 was released.

I can't activate Macrium 8 because the keys are for 7. I didn't find a way to get Macrium 7 so the keys will work.

There must be a way, but so far, I can't find it. Sigh . . .

Might be worth asking on the MR forum but I suspect you have to activate V7 first and then upgrade.

Just download free version from site, then enter your key(s). Then depending on length of time you bought keys, you may be entitled to free update.

Probably, but where do I find it? So far, all the old Macrium 7s I have saved have turned into 8. Or, I think that's what's happening.

Thanks, Cereberus. I found it finally, it's installed and I finally got it to accept my key.

However, Update to Reflect 8 has disappeared.
