    Hi there
Sorry - but that shouldn't be true. With ANY backup / restore software you should certainly the first time its installed test it by backing up and restoring. You should also do a bare metal stand alone restore.

If you don't have a spare machine or can't swap HDD's / SSD's easily then at least test it in a Virtual Machine.
You should also test recovery every so often. It's not hard to do -- on a modern systems if you have your OS sensibly organised an OS image backup should only take around 15 mins (and about the same for restore).

I'm sure people have said Ad Nauseam to take regular backups (and check them) - amazing how many don't and then even on these Forums where people are more computer literate than most there's zillions of posts asking for help on lost / damaged data.

    Cheers

Don't you believe a successful boot to a VM using viBoot?

    Hi there
I don't use viBoot !! however whatever you use for backup / recovery one should always test that it works !!!! If viBoot can restore a machine to what is required then that's fine. With Linux also its easy with things like dd to copy disks / partitions and the OS can load and run entirely from an external device even if there's no bootable HDD in the computer.

You can make a Windows to Go machine easily enough also but it's complicated cloning your current running OS to boot and run totally from an external device.

Macrium is 100% good enough for backup and restore of Windows OS or if you want to image entire disks (or clone them). For data backup - especially with large volumes of data you definitely need another plan -- it's no point imaging a 10TB data array when your data doesn't change that much --e.g music etc. In some ways backing up user data is more important than backing up the OS - the OS can usually be re-installed again and even old legacy abandoned software can often be found on Internet Archive sites - but if you lose say music ripped from several 100 or even 1000's of CD's - especially rare music or performances - well that's a different ballgame.

    Cheers

viBoot does not restore anything. What viBoot does is create Hyper-V differencing disks with your Macrium image file as the parent, allowing you boot your backup image directly as a VM. Come v8, it will be able do the same for a Virtualbox VM.

However I think all these people who like Viboot forget the essential problem : That if your HDD (or only HDD) on your computer is inoperative then Viboot is essentially a waste of time and no good whatsoever for a bare metal restore.

It's usually an issue with a faulty "C++ Redistributable Package," possibly needs re-installation. Lots of references on the net...
