I just downloaded and used Macrium. It was very good. Today I got a post tyelling me to purchase now as the trial was ending? Deleted. I was under the impress it was free.

Supposedly the trial will automatically turn into the free version, when the trial runs out.

But... even if that doesn't happen, you can still use version 7 for free.

If you go to this page, and scroll down, you can get version 7 (free).

So guys, those who have upgraded, do you consider it stable and reliable so far?

Also does it preserve all v7 settings on an upgrade?

If you installed the 30-day trial, then at the end of the trial it will prompt you to purchase. If you decline then it will continue to work as the Free version.

    my fault probably, thanks

Yes and yes with no issues. v8 has some useful features like more frequent file & folder backup, removable device backup and the backup filing structure is easier to navigate.

Just tested V8 on my new i7 laptop with 36 GB on main optane nvme SSD backing up to second nmve ssd at different compression levels.

    None - 2.0 mins 36 GB
    Medium - 2.5 mins 20 GB
    High - 5.0 mins 19 GB

There is little time difference between None and Medium, and Medium uses a lot less space.

High is much slower, and does not save much.

So default medium is clearly best for me.

Of course, these figures will vary a lot depending on pc, type of drive, what is stored etc.

When I did these tests on an old laptop with a spinning HDD, the None actually took longer than medium due to slow writing.

I have tested several devices down the years, and I have always concluded Medium give best balance between speed and storage.
