The reason I ask is because I found a link at macrium for 8.0.5945 free version. File checks out.
Be sure it's a reputable site . . . when in doubt, I ask folks at TenForums if this "site" is OK. As far as I know, v.8 free won't be out for at least 90 days from release of the paid version.

When you ask about a site, don't give a full link to it, in case it's one of those that will hose your system . . . you get my drift.

Even if it is a totally legitimate and genuine file, there is one small drawback in installing it.

I can remove the installed key from my v8 Home and it reverts to v8 Free. But.....

....As Reflect v8 Free has not been released yet, then a check for updates will say an update is available (with a blank 'release note') but if you install the 'update' it will actually patch Reflect back down to v7 Free.

Bottom line: you may be able to install v8 Free, but you'll never be able to update it - at least, not until the official release.

I took a note of the installed key while I had v8 Free. I can now install v8 Free by installing the v8 Trial from Macrium's site, then after the install change the key to the v8 Free key. I've done that for testing, which is how I know that an update will take it back down to v7 Free. Therefore I've decided to keep all my machines with Reflect Free on v7 until the official release.

I used to use VMWare Player but it went through a bad patch with the early W10 insider builds so I changed to Virtual Box and have never gone back.

Yeah, Virtual Box is another good choice, it's just so that I'm more familiar with VMware, using it for ages.

That might be the case technically but it won't be the easiest to use if you're new to virtual machines, IMO.

    True.

I also recommend, if you plan to try virtual machines for the first time then best guess is to begin with VMware Player, VirtualBox, then trying Hyper-V and other combinations to see the difference in options since each has its own advantages and use case.
Thank you all for your advice! I probably won't be doing this soon, especially since it's very new to me, but I've already saved references to your posts. This forum is great, but I'll post any new questions in the Virtualization forum, so as not to hijack this forum.

When I did that the V7 install failed because there was a later version already installed. I had to uninstall V8 Free before I could reinstall V7 Free.

    So it does....

...used to work. When I had a leaked copy of v8 Beta, that did reinstall v7 Free successfully.

I downloaded the trial version instead of trying to use an earlier download.

Although I went through the motions of making sure my keys work for the 4-pack I bought April 3, I was told I wasn't eligible for a free upgrade! Urk! I tried all four keys and was told they aren't upgradable! Sheesh! I then contacted Macrium and told them it seems my keys aren't any good.

So, I decided to get the information of my purchase and keys ready for the next phase . . .

I then downloaded the v.7 30-day trial and install it while waiting for Support to figure things out. When installing, I decided to plug in one of my 4-pack keys and it worked! Good Grief! Anyhoo, after installation, I was offered the free upgrade, so I said OK, and everything went as it should. In fact, I now have a Macrium Reflect 8 key on this Desktop.

After several hours, I'm now up and running, ready for the first backup (after I read the user manual).

Kind of the reason why I waited until the V8 version was officially out when MR was offering to buy a new license with discount and automatic upgrade to V8 while still on MR V7. I was kinda afraid of that type of road bump @Wynona just went through.

Considering v7 works perfectly fine I think I'll leave well enough alone for now. Thanx everyone.

I bought two new v7 keys just before v8 was released for only £31 then upgraded them for free to v8. This was cheaper than upgrading my existing v7 keys with the 50% off offer.
