    I formatted the 4TB ext HDD as NTFS to no avail

    Try deleteing all paritions and leaving tthe disk blank

    Why are you trying to clone to an external drive?

    as a backup measure.
    It cloned to the 2TB disk by the same vendor, really identical except for the size, 4tb vs 2tb.

    Why not back up with an image instead of a clone? There shouldn't be an issue for an image to be stored on the external, regardless of sector size.
