STU9000. I've used Microsoft 'Backup and Restore (Windows 7)' on my 2012 Dell desktop from 2012 to now with 0-image create/restore problems. 4 years with Windows 7, then 4 years with Windows 10; currently have 1909.

I also used Norton Ghost 15 for 8 years on my Dell. Partitions haven't changed since new. No clean installs with partition changes because I didn't want to lose Dell installed free software [MS Office Starter 2010 & Adobe Photoshop/Premiere]. Ghost does change the partition letters, but has no overall affect. OS partition is still C afterwards.

    Yes, it works well.

IIrc the windows system image GUI option "On a hard disk" does not apply to usb flash-drive.

I haven't tested to see if it is possible to select a usb flash as destination using wbadmin commands.

The point is it is a deprecated feature and no supported. If it works well for you, fine but no guarantee it will work for others.

I have had several failures and no longer use it.

The GUI only allows an HDD to be selected, and IIRC it needs to be NTFS formatted. A flash drive, even NTFS formatted, cannot be selected, it will say it's not a valid backup location. A way to bypass that restriction is to share the usb, then select it as a network location for the backup.

Unfortunately that's only half the story. When booted to 'Restore an Image' from Advanced Startup the same 'not on a usb flash drive' restriction applies. Such an image on the usb can only be restored by sharing the usb from another PC and browsing the network to find it. As WiFi would not be available you'd need to use an Ethernet connection to do that.

So no, a usb flash drive is not really a practical solution for a 'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' system image.

I've just made a system image to a usb on a PC running 2004 to confirm that.
