Hi, good find- never needed to look for that in Macrium.
    Yes, assign a drive letter.
I'm guessing it shouldn't be in use as seen from Windows, so you can try chkdsk from that. If needed I'd expect you to be prompted for your PC to restart for the check to run.

Any problems, you can boot to a command prompt and run it from there.

As to whether it will fix that.. anyone's guess.

Perform disk check as mentioned above as well just in case.

When you say "(also) perform disk check as mentioned above as well just in case" am I right that you're referring to using a 3rd party software package to do the checking? I wanted to be sure I understood correctly - I'm happy to still do 3rd party checking as part of this whole thing.

Looks like zbook is suggesting a different approach - I'll review that post and see where it would take me; will keep you all posted on what I do and what results I get.

Worst case, I guess I can wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of Win 10 2004 from scratch. Done that a few times on another machine.

    Please test the drive.
Ghot recommended Crystal Disk and dalchina recommended HD sentinel.

    Run Crystal Disk standard edition:

Run HD Sentinel: (free or trial edition)

Other tests for drives include error / surface testing and long generic testing:

Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark

Once the drive tests report no significant problems you can label the system partition and attempt to run chkdsk on FAT32 and / or format the partition and create a new one.

ZBook, didn't see your latest post until now as I was busy working my way through your earlier list of items to do. So here's what I have so far:

Here is the information from Disk Management (I used snips rather than a full screen shot so the text would be easier to read):
Macrium Image Failure - Error Code 6-dm-columns.png
Macrium Image Failure - Error Code 6-dm-graphic-small.png
BTW, the red asterisk marks the partition that Macrium says has the Cluster Run Error
Also, BTW, this is a Dell machine so that's probably why it has so many partitions on Disc 0 - one is even called Dell Support

Here is the information from MiniTool Disk Partition Wizard Free (snip - let me know if you need the full screenshot):
Macrium Image Failure - Error Code 6-minitool.png

And I've downloaded and run V2, and am now attaching the zip of the results
    LAURIE-D5579-LA-(2020-08-31_21-52-30).zip

I haven't done the final action yet - copy and paste all that code into the Command Prompt - because I wanted to double check what those commands will do since I'm not very good at speaking DOS or parsing code or whatever. It looks to me like the commands will just gather and list a whole bunch of information about the partitions and the disk, but please confirm that this is accurate.

And thanks for being patient - I'm still learning a lot of the technical stuff.

    - - - Updated - - -

I'll need to run all the 3rd party drive test software tomorrow - it looks like you are recommending
    --Crystal Disk
    --HD Sentinel
    --HD Tune
    --Sea Tools

Will post results per your detailed post once I have them.

There is a much easier way to solve your problem.

Boot from Reflect in Winpe mode and click link "fix windows boot problems".

This will delete the corrupt bcd and rebuild it from scratch.

Thank you so much for your post. I will keep your suggestion as a back up plan.

However, since I need to be my own IT department, it's clear that I don't yet have the knowledge or tools to do so. Right now, I think I will learn a lot from doing the things zbook is asking me to do, although it may be frustrating at times for all concerned while I get through it all. I apologize in advance for any dumb questions I may ask.

    - - - Updated - - -

Okay, here is an update on my progress:

    1) I updated the system specs as completely as I could for my D5579. There were a few items where I don't have the details:
--I bought this as a predefined package from Dell in mid-2018; I upgraded the CPU and RAM, and got a bigger SSD, but otherwise everything was stock as far as I know.
--Couldn't find specs for the following: motherboard, sound card, case, and cooling.
--Only external devices are a USB mouse, various USB sticks or external WD hard drives for backup/storage/file transfer, and a couple of headsets. I also wirelessly access our HP printer which is wired into our router (specific models listed for printer, mouse, and headsets)

(Regarding this info, I used Device Manager plus the Dell System Configuration (original and current) function, I even went back to my original purchase order looking for the motherboard, sound card, cooling, and so forth with no success. If there is another data source that I should check, please let me know.)

    2) I reran Chdsk on my C Drive with no errors found. I've attached a text file with the results.

    ChkDsk C 09012020.txt

    3) I ran the set of commands from zbook's earlier post. I've attached a text file with the results. (If I need to change this and instead paste the text for each of these directly into the thread, just say so and I will fix it.)

    ENUM ALL 09012020.txt

    4) I ran the Tuneup.bat file. Instead of posting the results directly in this thread, I've attached a text file with the results.

    TuneupBat Results 09012020.txt

    5) I ran the DIskParInfo.bat file. Instead of posting those results directly in this thread, I've attached a text file with the results.

    DIskParInfoBat Results 09012020.txt

    6) I ran the custom tests from the Dell Support Diagnostic web site. They all came back with no issues. I watched as they ran, and I pulled screen shots of the results.

Macrium Image Failure - Error Code 6-dell-results-09012020.png

I've also attached a PDF of the details - showing tests run for each component.

    Dell Test Results 9_1_2020.pdf

That's as far as I've gotten. Will tackle the 3rd party tools next.

(In the meantime, I just wanted to add that I especially enjoyed watching the Dell video and camera tests - I got to see the actual graphics and images as the tests ran - shaders, wireframes, transformation & lighting, and so forth - and it was a blast. Thanks, zbook!)

    - - - Updated - - -

    One follow up note:

zbook, in the last part of your post, you showed data that listed errors on HardDisk 2. I may be confused, but I think Hard Disk 2 is my external USB stick. Just for the record, I removed that USB stick before I ran the latest tests, since that is the disk where Macrium found the Cluster Run Error when I was trying to image it.

If necessary, I can plug in my external USB and rerun the tests to see if it has errors and if I can fix those errors once we get my internal SSD drive fixed.

The event viewer report is likely an external drive.
Notations for drives are often inconsistent so all drives are tested.
The text report results and Dell diagnostics look good.

These commands will identify the EFI (system partition) and label it with the letter W:

    Code:
    diskpart
    lis dis
    lis vol
    sel dis 0
    det dis
    lis par
    sel par 1
    det par
    assign letter=w
    lis par
    sel par 1
    det par
    exit

    chkdsk /r /v W:

Once it is labeled run chkdsk /r /v W:
The drive partition is < 1 GB so chkdsk should be quick.

Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer.
Copy and paste into notepad > save to desktop > post into the thread using a one drive, drop box, or google drive share link:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10

Then see if Macrium will run after the chkdsk fix and recover.

Once the Macrium backup works there will be one more step to remove the assigned drive letter.
