Should my USB drive be formatted NTFS before creating the recovery drive? I see conflicting info on this - some posts say that creating the recovery drive will format the USB, and other say that it has to be reformatted to NTFS from FAT32 before creating the recovery drive.

Also, is there a way to verify that the recovery drive will actually work? I'm finding posts that say it appeared that it was created successfully using the Windows tools, but when they tried to use it, it did not work.

    Thanks again,
    Deb

I searched C: and did not find windows.old

Do I have to create a Windows recovery disk from my computer before I uninstall those two updates? I can try that again.

    Sorry, what recovery drive?

First check your disk as previous post. You can use this (portable- run it from a flash drive if you wish):
HD Tune - The Portable Freeware Collection

then if ok run chkdsk as previous post.

Your safest option to preserve your current state would be to use Macrium Reflect to create a disk image file (of all Windows partitions- typically 4 for a UEFI installation) on an external disk.

Then you can attempt to uninstall an update.

It appears windows.old is gone from C:

I downloaded and ran HDTune - no errors were found on Health or Error Scan. Running chkdsk c: /scan from an Admin powerShell prompt shows 'Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.'

What risks are there in uninstalling those two Windows updates? After a system restore broke all of my apps, I am now very nervous about messing with restore/uninstall/resetting Windows. I have full and recent backups of all of my files and documents.

I don't have an unused external hard drive to use for the Macrium Reflect disk image - I ordered one but it won't be here for a week.

    Thanks,
    Deb

That's good, but of course offers no explanation for what happened with system restore.

Change always represents a possible risk. Safest course- wait for the disk. It should be at least as large as the used space you intend to image, image files being compressed, and then allow some headroom and room for expansion. 1Tb hard drives can be quite inexpensive these days.

    Thanks!

Thanks - I ordered two 2 TB portable hard drives for this purpose - one for me, one for my husband. Time to practice ALL of the safety measures, not just backing up our data.

One final question - I want to create a bootable Windows recovery USB drive just in case. I have new 32 GB that is formatted FAT32. Should I reformat it first to NTFS?

Thanks again. Soooo appreciated that you provided such awesome support.

    Here's how:
Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10

    note:
Back up system files to the recovery drive will require that the USB flash drive is large (at least 32-64 GB) enough for this.
