Acronis Cloned Disk fails to boot.

I have a backup plan that, aside from making regular Acronis images of the C drive, I also clone the C (Samsung 970 M.2 SSD) to D (Samsung 850 SSD). The saved images work perfectly with respect to recovering the C drive. However, I decided to test booting from the cloned D and was surprised to find Win 10 would not boot from the clone. I sit watching a spinning wheel forever before hitting power-off. Is there a simple, logical reason for this?

When you are booting are both drives connected?
Have you replaced the M.2 drive within the PC with the SSD?
Do the partitions match on both drives?

Both disks are built-in to the PC. The entire C is cloned to the D, so partitions are the same. Both disks were connected when I tested the D by going into the UEFI BIOS and setting the D clone as the boot priority 1.

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that might be the problem but given the hassle of removing the M.2 I may decide to rethink my backup plan. Abandon the clone and keep two copies of the image, one on the 850 SSD and another on an HDD also on the PC.
