Can't create System Image using the built-in image creator

When I try to create a system image by going to Control Panel in Large Icon View>Backup and Restore (Windows 7) >Create a system image>select the backup location and press next, it ask me to confirm my settings then I hit Start Backup and when I do it says "Preparing to create backup" and the progress bar starts going up but I eventually get the error message below. I have tried saving the backup to a external hard drive and even a USB Flash drive, but get the same error message (Below). I don't use my computer during the time when it tries to create the system image, help!

    The backup failed.
The operation timed-out before the shadow copy was created on the storage location. (0x80780036)

    Additional Information:
The shadow copy provider timed out while flushing data to the volume being shadow copied . This is probably due to excess activity on the volume. Try again later when the volume is not being used so heavily. (0x80042313)
Windows Version number: Windows 10 Pro version 2004 (OS Build: 19041.388) and current up to date. Can't create System Image using the built-in image creator-windows-image-error.png

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) is deprecated, not developed, not supported.

Many tenforums members prefer Macrium Reflect (free/paid) + external storage for image files. This is maintained and supported, and updated several times during the year. It's far more robust and offers more features.

Even MS recommends the use of 3rd party tools. See also

Turning to your error message- the mention of shadow copy suggests creating a System Restore point may be problematic. I suggest you try that to see if you also get a VSS-related error, in which case that may point to an appropriate area needing repair.

VSS_E_FLUSH_WRITES_TIMEOUT (0x80042313): The shadow copy provider timed out while flushing data to the volume being shadow copied. This is probably due to excessive activity on the volume. Try again later when the volume is not being used so heavily.

The free version should be more than adequate for your needs. It's the one we recommend the most. Tons of help available from members here and the tutorials.

Do check you can create a restore point- Macrium relies on VSS as well, so would be good to know you don't have a problem there.

If needed, Macrium does have a VSS Fixer tool built in.

I can create restore points just fine and in fact Macrium Reflect created its own restore point.
