    windows.old

Yesterday tried to access folder, said I do not have permissions,
    although my account is admin.

Using tool off web, and 12 hours machine time on quad core, reset
permissions on all files in windows.old

Last night clicked on folder, disk access light came on, still on this morning.

Soooo shut machine off, tried again for access, no can do.

Any thoughts to save me greatly appreciated.

    Regards, Dana.

Windows.old is a system file used only for recovering the operating system after a upgrade install, it is designed to delete itself 10 days after the install.

Changing the permissions of the file/folder will have made the system restore impossible, You may as well delete the file, right click on the C: Drive (system/Windows Drive), and select Properties - Disk Cleanup - System files and follow the instructions given exactly

I do not want to do a system restore, just access files in windows.old

Basically my permissions utility just took ownership of them.

They are not user accessible, they are system files and are only accessible by the system, for the one purpose. If you do not want to use them for their only purpose, recovery of a failed update, which would be unlikely to work as the permissions are corrupted, then you should follow instructions and delete the file/folder

No actually there was a folder inside the .old folder named "Documents", same for
"Desktop". And from size of .old, 1.6TB, that accounts for all the docs and
crap I had on desktop and in documents.

And after taking ownership properties of folder still report 0 bytes in folder, but using
a non Microsoft directory browser it reports the correct amount, ~, of size of the
    folder.

That does not work because it now wont allow me to open folder. Once I got it
open, second time it would not because it said I did not have permission, I used
a util to take ownership, still wont let me open folder.

If I click it hard disk access light comes on, stays on, as if I am searching for ET.
Over 12 hours still searching last night into today.

    Hi,
I would suggest if you want access to restore images use a system that allows mounting of system images
    Macrium reflect allows such access

Windows install is NOT creating windows.old folder and contents as an image file, its a "normal"
folder, or so its advertised that way.

    Hi,
It is an image of the prior install it's just compressed a lot more than a conventional system images are compressed

Seriously though use system images and get rid of windows.old all together
There's a reflec tutorial on tenforums too
This one helped me way before it came up
