I used Casper for many, many years, mostly for cloning, which it did impeccably, and for infrequent image creations, also without problem. I found the technical support pretty good but switched to Macrium 7, now 8, paid version a year ago because FSS Dev had no customer forum, very little presence on line outside its own website, very rarely figured in revues or discussions of backup software and I was concerned that this pointed to a relatively small customer base and perhaps therefore little chance of help with any issues that could arise that might not be satisfactorily resolved by the developers. Macrium Reflect has a large user base, responsive support and user forum of its own and excellent support in this and other forums.

I just wish the Reflect UI wasn't written by geeks for geeks.

There are some good tutorials on YouTube on using Macrium Reflect - they may help people who at first feel overwhelmed.

Casper finally working for routine SmartClone backup

I finally succeeded in having Casper SmartCloning my back up disks on a daily and weekly basis.
I still have 2 issues though:

    1. If there are two many changes on a disk compare to the last backup, Caster SmartClone defaults to a complete re-back up of the whole drive, which can take up to one day and a half for my largest partition (6Tb).

    2. The system (Windows 10) supposedly bootable USB drive system (Windows 10) backup created with Casper does not boot. I tried it several times, after adjusting UFEI to allow for USB external boot. No way...

I contacted Future Systems Solutions (Casper maker) on May 2 this year (2022) through their Web ticket system to ask them about both issues:
    1. What is the maximum number of changes before smartclone can't be applied any longer. If that's measurable...
    2. How to remedy to my Casper created "bootable" system clone not booting on the USB drive. I don't want to take the risk to overwrite my present system disk with its clone to check whether I would boot if transferred on the laptop SSD).
As of June 5, 2022, more than a month later, I have received no response from FSS.

Update. FSSDEV tech came back to me regarding another issue and I alerted them about that "non-booting-suposedly-bootable-system-image" Ticket opened months ago. Now they are waiting for me to send a log file to see what exactly happens when my laptop failed to boot from the USB drive... I am planing to send them a cleaned up log file for Windows 10 boot attempt only.

To me, this shows the downside of using lesser known vendors - the tool may be great but the backup can be slow (if at all).

Contrast that with support from Macrium Reflect (paid version) which is really excellent, most issues being sorted in a week or so.

As an aside (a while since I used it), it can clone to vhdx files for backups but it is rather wasteful on space.

Of course, you can do the same with Macrium Reflect but you have to manually create the vhdx file first and mount it but that only takes about a minute from disk management.

I OP'd this thread back about..... pre-civil war. So long ago, I forgot the crux of my underlying question. Since then mostly Macrium users dominated the airwaves on this thread. Like you, I kept Casper since I only use it for cloning Win drive to replicate deep-freeze protocol refreshes for extra security besides Norton. So I kept it for only the basics. I don't hang-out on the web.... gun-and-run.
But it's' good to hear your comments as reinforcement. I too haven't had issues with Casper all these years for what little I use it for.
