Windows 10 v 2004.I notice when selecting Settings-Windows Update-Backup-the option to "add a drive"
to back up using file history has been replaced with "Automatically back up my files"although not ON as default.
How does this work to back up to a seperate drive?
I have updated to 2004 on two machines, one with File History in use, the other where it has never been set up.
You should see 'add a drive' if none has been selected yet....
...and 'automatically back up my files' where a drive has already been selected.
Click the 'More options' link to see what drive is currently selected.
If you wish to change the drive then scroll to the bottom of Back-up options where you can stop using the currently selected drive.
Then the 'add a drive' option will reappear.

I have two folders called Catalog.EDB and two folders called Config.XML,I don`t know these file extensions or how to open
them can you help?
You don't open them, they are there for File History to keep track of what was backed up and when. There's nothing that can read a .edb file, but a .xml file is a text document, opened by default in Internet Explorer. You could read it, but I wouldn't bother. It won't make much sense....
Those you should have seen in a Configuration folder. You should also see a Data folder there. That you could explore and see the copies of your files, each with a datestamp added to its file name in the form of 'MyFilename (2020_05_30 21_56_43 UTC).extension'.
You could manually copy the file(s) from the backup if you wish, but the preferred method of restoring one or more files is to 'Restore your files with File History'. This will read that catalog database and let you browse your History by date, restoring files from your chosen date with the datestamp automatically removed.
