I'm afraid that Macrium is going to require a full and stable Shadow Copy Service running un-crippled in any way. An In-place repair may or may not fix it, as you have found out. It appears you will have to bite the bullet, clean install, if Kipper's suggestion of sequence doesn't help. Always nicer not to have to do a clean, but if it's the last resort, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Macrium really is the best on the market, Free or Paid, and the time you will spend getting your system back together is well worth it.

There might be a work-around for you, so that you can make full images of Windows OS partitions and your data partition onto external media - before considering a full reinstall. Image for Windows (pay for), AOMEI Backupper (fee & free), EaseUS todo (free & fee), Macrium Reflect 6 or 7, and other backup/restore programs that can do full images without using VSS -- one has to create either DVD or USB boots though.

Completely uninstall Macrium Reflect Free.
--- I know you have already done that more than once but please follow through.

Empty system restore points but do not disable Protection settings.
--- Later on manually create a restore point and let automatic restore point be create every 7 days (sometimes it takes the 8th or 9th day to happen)
--- Naturally you can create manual ones anytime you want but I don't usually do that.
--- In fact I haven't had to use a system restore point for I don't know how long, I just keep them available as the possibility of using one might be ok in a certain situation.

Afterward run sfc /scannow and then dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth if applicable.
Restart the PC.
--- Continue with some maintenance items if you do any.
--- I do Storage Sense as well as CCleaner (do not use the registry cleaner.)

I've looked up some methods to deal with VSS issues but I wouldn't know which one to recommend

The same error is posted on the Macrium Software Forum here.
Have you installed any other imaging application apart from Reflect?
In that particular thread AOMEI Backupper broke things.

If it is a VSS-related issue, you could try Tweaking.com's free repair tool (Google) - one of the repair options is VSS.

Observe the careful preparatory steps the tool offers, select only the relevant repair.

May or may not help, but nothing lost by trying bar the time and effort.
