Format C Drive and Restore From Backup

    Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.1217)

Hi, I have an issue where an older version of a program must be uninstalled before the new version is installed.

When attempting to uninstall the old version, it did not complete properly. As a result, most of the files are still there, but now I am unable to complete the task because it does not show up in the list of installed programs.

I tried deleting the program folders and reinstalling, but it thinks it is already installed and will not go further.

I cannot run the new version because it will crash.

I am thinking of formatting the C Drive, and then restoring everything from backup.

    Is this a good idea?

    Is there a better way?

    Thanks for any help.

Hi, do you have a disk image or a restore point you created before either installing or uninstalling the program?

If so, use that, and proceed from there using a free 3rd party uninstaller such as Revo or Wise Uninstaller.O

Otherwise an uninstaller tool may help. I routinely use one when uninstalling to clear up the debris (very common- depends on author).

In your situation, you'd need, in principle, one with a 'forced uninstall' option. That allows you to browse to almost any remaining file or folder and allow the uninstall program to scan from there.

Wise uninstaller is the only one I know of that offers that in the free version.

However, since you have already manually deleted folders, there may be nothing to start from.

but it thinks it is already installed
    - probably remaining traces in the registry.

Your best hope may be to reinstall the program - if it will- run Revo or Wise uninstaller and start the uninstallation from that.

Otherwise you might be able to find some starting point for a forced uninstall, but given what you've done that may well not succeed.

Your other option is to back up the registry, create a system restore point, and manually scan for keys related to the program and delete them.

tenforums members often tirelessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging to give you a second chance and to recover from many situations -even disk failure- e.g Macrium Reflect (free-paid)/

    Hi dalchina,

I restored my computer to yesterday's date.

I was able to attempt the uninstall of the program. Same thing happened, except that I received an error that a file could not be found or may be corrupted. Most of the files remained, as before, and program removed from program list.

I was able to get a special cleaning tool for this program, so I went back to system restore and all previous restore points were gone, except for the last one from today.

Now I am unable to restore it from yesterday's date.

I don't understand why I lost all previous restore points.

Maybe something else is going on here.

    Any idea?

Had you been troubleshooting failed Windows upgrades or had you blocked windows upgrades?
Which program are you having problems with?

    No troubleshooting done.

I know there was a Windows update installed last week.

Are you aware of any issues?

Did you plan to remain using Windows 1809?

At this point I do not believe the program caused me to lose all my restore points.

What could have caused the loss of the restore points?

    Bad Windows update? Something else?

In post 2, Dalchina recommended you reinstall the offending program.............and then try to uninstall it again.

    Did you do that?

I was able to get a special cleaning tool for this program.
Again, which program are you dealing with?
Sounds as if it could be an AV or security program.

I restored my computer to yesterday's date.
How did you do that? From a disk image? Or using a restore point?

I don't understand why I lost all previous restore points.
There are 10's of posts about restore points vanishing. If you used a restore point to restore your system and had some earlier ones I wouldn't have expected the earlier ones to disappear.

Please focus now on the questions asked. Thanks.

A good trick in that situation is to reinstall the program then try uninstalling it again perhaps using Revo Uninstaller Free
