System Image Backup - 0 bytes

Earlier backups from two PCs show all files in the WindowsBackup folder.

But in 1909, though it goes through all the (time consuming) motions and reports success, the folder is empty. Two attempts.

    Has the feature been disabled?

No but it has been 'deprecated', meaning that it is not being fixed if Windows updates cause problems for it, and MS have recommended that it is not used any more.

Macrium Reflect is often recommended in this forum. It makes system images but they are not in ISO format.

It can make bootable system images. This facility is called viBoot and it requires Win10 Pro.

You are incorrect. Viboot works on Home as well.

ViBoot requires Hyper-V, so how can it work on Home?

No, but as @Try3 says it is a deprecated feature.

It has been a very long time since I used Windows own imaging but I used to use it extensively (I now use Macrium). I have just tested it for you in 1909.

What you need to know is that by default you do not have permissions for the WindowImageBackup folder so if you check its properties you won't see any of the files it contains.

You need to try exploring WindowsImageBackup and each of its subfolders in turn in order to be asked if you want to have permission to access them....

Once you have permissions for all its folders, then you can see the true contents.

So yes, in my test Windows Image Backup still works in 1909.

Interestingly, A clean install of the Release Preview version of 2004 still includes a functioning Back up and Restore (Windows 7) so it's deprecated, but not gone yet. I'd still recommend switching to Macrium Reflect Free though.

In the past the image has not required any permissions changes in order to view its files.

After changing the owner to 'administrator' the permissions prompt did eventually pop up and the files are now listed.

    Thanks for the insight.

Another method of seeing how big they are is to use Treesize [free]

But please do not forget that this is a deprecated feature that MS say you should not use.

In truth, it's not used here but serves as a backup to the backup.

TerabyteUnlimited's Image For Windows - likely similar in features to Macrium - has done the job for many years. Thanks.
