System Restore is suddenly disabled - how do I enable it?

Issue solved:Please see post #50 for the culprit.

Fairly new PC, Win10 Pro 64-bit all updates. System restore was working fine last week, as I created a manual restore point before installing a major piece of software.

I just went to do the same thing again, but found that all the controls on the System Protection tab of the System properties window are disabled...

How do I enable it? I've tried the following...

*) Saw this tutorial, but obviously can't follow it as all the controls are disabled.

*) Tried running the following from an elevated Powershell window...

    Enable-ComputerRestore -Drive "C:"
    ...but that gave an error...

    Enable-ComputerRestore : Could not enable drive C:\.At line:1 char:1+ Enable-ComputerRestore -Drive "C:"+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [Enable-ComputerRestore], ArgumentException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : EnableComputerRestoreNotEnabled,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.EnableComputerRestoreCommand

*) Tried modifying the DisableSR reg key at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore to have the value 0, and tried deleting it, but it was always restored almost immediately

*) Tried using the Group Policy editor to set "Turn off System Restore" to "Not configured" (which it was already, but I changed it to Disabled and then back again).

None of these helped, the controls are all still disabled. Anyone any idea how I re-enable them?

    Thanks

System specs can be seen here...

    Hello Yossu,

What you posted is normally responsible for disabling System Restore like in the tutorial below.

By default, the DisableSR DWORD should be deleted for a Not Configured setting.

Enable or Disable System Restore in Windows

You might search the registry for DisableSR to see if it may have been added anywhere else by something.

Do you have any 3rd party tweaking type programs installed that may have a setting for this that's overriding?

Yup, I followed that tutorial, see my last two bullet points above. The policy editor changes didn't help, and as mentioned, as soon as I deleted the DisableSR reg key, it was immediately recreated.

Don't know if it's relevant, but I have the following keys...

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\System\DisableSystemRestore\Reg ValueNameRedirect which has a value of DisableSR

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableSR which has a value of 1

Would either of these affect it?

Not knowingly. What sort of thing might do this?

    Thanks again.

Delete the DisableSR DWORD values in both keys to see if that will enable System Restore again for you.

Any program like Winaero Tweaker that may include a setting to disable System Restore.

Did that. The ones in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore and Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore were immediately recreated. The other one wasn't, but the controls are all still disabled.

    No, nothing like that.

Thanks again, what do I do now?

Test by toggling the "Turn off System Restore" group policy setting to Enabled > Apply > Not Configured > OK to see if that may clear it.

Just to verify, are you joined to a work or school domain by chance where their policies will be enforced on your laptop?

Nope. I tried this before, but using Disabled instead of Enabled, but it still doesn't work.

Nope, this is a standalone machine in my home office.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the time you're spending on this.

This is a good guide - note the two items in Group Policy. It shows exactly your case according to the screenshot.
Not sure if you've already covered everything though..

Hello dalchina, thanks for the reply.

I already tried both of those methods. As I mentioned, as soon as I delete either of those two reg keys, they are immediately recreated.

    Thanks again. Any other ideas?

    Thanks.
Do you have any policies enabled at all?
Have you used any sort of 'privacy' tool or tweak tool, or registry cleaner?
Can you think of any change that you have made or that has occurred?
