Help With Macrium Reflect - VSS Errors

    Hi,

All of a sudden I started getting VSS errors in Macrium Reflect. They have utilities VSSFix which I ran. I made sure the Volume Shadow Copy service is running, restarted it. Uninstalled Acronis and Veracrypt - not sure if related.

My drive is Bitlocker encrypted but it is unlocked while running Reflect within Windows 10.

    Below are the errors:

    From log:

    Code:
    Date: 5/10/2020 10:55:11 PM
    Type: Error

    ].

    Operation:

Hi, what's your Windows build number? The forum prompted you for this so we don't have to keep asking.

    Suggest you start with basics:
    a. Disk- Run HDTune v2.55 (free) - Health and Error Scan tabs.
    b. If ok run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt
    c. If ok similarly run
    sfc /scannow

    and post the summary result.

If those pass, your physical disk and file system and system files are ok.

    See e.g.
[SOLVED] Recurring VSS error in event log with event ID 12293 - Windows Server - Spiceworks
    - makes reference to truecrypt volumes; similar could apply to veracrypt.

(I searched using your error message
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details Cannot ask provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} if volume is supported. [0x8000ffff] [hr = 0x8000ffff, Catastrophic failure ]
    )

You could try Tweaking.com's free repair tool following the preparatory steps, and run repair 18 (VSS). Be selective.

Hi. Please do this - I need a baseline install.

    1. Uninstall Macrium Reflect cleanly - everything. (Not your backup images!)
    2. Make sure there are no files left over from the uninstall - check Program Files, AppData, ProgramData folders. (View hidden files.)
    3. Download CCleaner portable and run "registry" ensure that no all Macrium entries are cleaned.
    4. Reboot system.
    5. Install the latest revision above.
    6. Reboot, start MR, configure your options and test.

    Note:

    Bug fixes and Improvements v7.2.4859 - 23rd April 2020

    • File and Folder Backup
We've excluded MS Volume Shadow Copy from participating in backups of removable drives. Previously, a File and Folder backup would report VSS errors before continuing if folders on a removable drive, such as a Flash drive, were included. VSS is not supported on removable media.
    • MS Exchange
Some customers have reported an application crash when running MS Exchange incremental backups. This has been resolved.
    • GPT Disk Layouts
We've added an additional check to allow the GPT partition table to contain gaps when loading disk layouts in Reflect. It's possible that GPT partition tables can be non-contiguous if the disk has been formatted or updated using Linux.
    • Rescue Media

      • To distinguish between multiple Ethernet Adapters with a similar name, the Windows PE Network Adapter dialog now shows the MAC address of each adapter.
      • Changing the rescue media staging area volume would not always remove all the files on the old volume. This has been resolved.
      • If a new edition of Reflect is installed, e.g, Workstation to Server, the Rescue Media Builder will now prompt for a rebuild of the rescue media.

    Post back and advise.

    Thanks.

What does this mean? Does it mean that you can't backup to external usb drives/removable media while within Windows 10 ? I am trying to backup my system drive in which I am running Macrium Reflect to an external USB drive

Note: I am not backing up an external drive, I am backing up to an external drive

Edit: I also am getting errors trying to create restore point in Windows which I think is related because it also uses VSS

    @jmsnyc -

What is the exact error in Windows 10?

Well, I'm able to create a full image and save it on a external drive, no problem.
Seems that the problem may not involve Macrium, if you can't create a simple restore point.

    Try this -

    Post back.

    Thanks.

User needs to repair VSS on system or deal with any incompatibilities created as a result of using encryption software.

My post above attempted to address that.

Thanks. Appreciate your suggestions. I will do an sfc scannow a bit later. Have to resolve some other things first Have already tested drives using utilities.

As a side note, though I had Veracrypt installed I have not used it to encrypt my system drive. My system drive has always been encrypted by Bitlocker, for years.
