    MR Restore problem

    MR v7.2.4850 W10 = 18363.815

First time ever having a problem doing a MR restore. Created an image ~52GB (not a clone) of this version and wanted to restore to my drive G:. Got the following error. "Not all copied Insufficient space" Looking at the error on the net, seems to think that when you do a clone and the source is bigger than the destination this will happen. This is an image, it used to trim if the source/destination were of different sizes. Here is what I am seeing, appreciate any assistance.

Maybe you should shrink partition number 4 by another GB and then restore partition number 5.

The answer is here Message "Not all partitions copied. Insufficient space" - KnowledgeBase v7.2 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase

    Pretty clear.

You should be using the clone function to accomplish what you want to do.

I never had to do a clone before when restoring an image. The program would auto trim the partitions to fit. i.e. say I had 100GB of data on a 250 GB ssd, I would make an image and I could restore that image to a 120 GB SSD without issue, no changing of partition size and not by copying a partition to the destination drive, it was automatic. I believe the last update changed all of this? This is an example of the auto re-size.

is there any free space on the target disk in your example ? Show Diskmgmt display

I believe that there isn't enough free space and MR can't make that last partition small enough to fit.

    Easy solution.

When restoring, clear all partitions on target drive and use drag and drop of partitions, so restore is in order is set as 1,2,3,5,4 i.e. you swap partitions 4 and 5.

Then partition 4 will get reduced to fit.

Yes I believe you are correct. I ended up shrinking the C: partition by 3 GB and then it worked. I had a 1 meg space at the end so used mini partition tool to extend out the C: drive.

After the post of the example, it dawned on me that MR must only be able to shrink the last partition so therefore it could not shrink partition 5 enough to make the whole space small enough. But good suggestion to put the order 1,2,3 5,4. I seem to remember that it re-sized (trim) in the past without issue.

    Tx for the tips.

Another extenuating cause, the SSD (Intel) I was using to make a back up from is sized @ 256 GB, most others are in the ~ 240 range.

Further Update: Did another restore of same disk, swapped partition 5 & 4. MR reduced 4 and it fit perfectly. Restore completed without issue.

    Hi there
actually the error was easy to spot from your diagram -- source disk said someting like 238GB while target disk said 223 GB. No free space on Source disk when copying partitions to the target so it wants the 238GB -- therefore insufficient space, !!
Even if the partition is 90% empty the allocation routines will still attempt to allocate the space even if there's no data to be copied -- that's why you have to shink the partition first !!!! (which you've done) -- That's the logic for the fail. !!

OK You've fixed it -- but "Litre into half a litre glass won't go" !!!!!

    Cheers
