Please try to help, Macrium Clone error but now original drive messed

Hi guys, so I am totally totally confused on this one and really in a bad situation.

I have a HDD that is 1TB that I was cloning to a 500gb m.2 nvme SSD using Macrium free latest as of 4/19/2020

I select and drag all partitions from the original drive down to the clean empty new m.2 SSD and started the clone ( I did have to press partition properties and try to drag the sizes for the C: on the SSD becuase the SSD is only 500gb but I made sure there was only 377gb on the original HDD so it would fit on the SSD..

Anyway, the whole process got to 70% and then failed, and said this in the picture BUT NOW all the sudden my ORIGINAL HDD has 930free space and a partition that is all free and the 2 or 3 other partitions like "reserved" and recovery" etc..

But what just happened? Now I lost my files on my original hard drive because the clone failed which isn't even supposed to touch my original HDD at all?? What could have gone wrong?

DId macrium try to copy a partition to the original HDD and completely mess up? WHy did my partitions get off on my original HDD..

I don't care about the new SSD, I just want my original HDD back to normal and now it has a new partition structure all the sudden!

I'll try to upload more pictures, but so far that's what has happened.

    Hope this makes sense.

Should I be running Testdisk or something to try to get my files?

    More pictures incoming..

    In this thread DiskGenius worked.

Lost a bunch of data, how to get windows to stop looking for it?

That said exactly what Macrium did is up for question so applying any fix could make things worse. I do not profess to be any kind of data recovery expert, just this thread pass through just recently.

I might even join their forum since they deal with Macrium exclusively. They have a section on Cloning.

Can you clarify this "I just want my original HDD back to normal and now it has a new partition structure all the sudden! " ? What did you mean by that ? Can you boot from the original drive ?

The error message that M.R. reported indicated that a cluster in use by a file is not marked as 'in use' by the file system bitmap but it is in use. This is an error in the file mapping structure. Before doing any major disk operations, you need to always run a "ChkDsk /F /R" on the any drive that you plan on backing up or cloning. Even though the disk is operating to your normal environment, doesn't mean that it isn't corrupted somewhere.

I your able to boot from it run a "Chkdsk x: /f /r".

Unfortunately, It somehow messed with the original drive I don't even know why or how, I was literally just cloning with macrium and then you see the picture and that error..

NOw when I look at my original hard drive, it says free space 931gb free and my files are not on my original drive ...

and no i can not boot from it..

So now i have windows on the ssd installed and i need to try to recovver my files from the orginal drive.. that is where i am at right now..

thinking of using testdisk or something..

Thanks, do you think this program might find .tex and .lyx files?

The program I use is MIKTEX.. so it's those programs files I just want to find...

Ok so the drive on top that says "unallocated" was the original hard drive and it was of course not like that until after the clone from macrium failed.. When I say original, I mean the Hard drive A .

My situation was I was trying to Clone (original) Harddrive A to new SSD (just bought) Drive B.

    Make sense?

Drive A was the original computer hard drive with windows 10 and original everything.. but now after the clone failed, that is how it is..

    make sense now?

So clone drive ****ed it up somehow and it blows my mind how that could have happened..

anyway, i ran qphotorec.exe and it found pictures and etc..

My next only problem is I need to find .lyx and .tex files which are from a program called Miktex.. it is files from that..

SO I guess I should try to use testdisk and hope it can see those type of files..

meanwhile I think macrium or because i left both drives in the computer when i cloned or something, I think it changed the MFT or something and that is now why my original drive A is now "unallocated"..

SO that is my situation right now..

A recovery program unless it is specific to a file type should find all file types. Should be key word.

When DiskGenius was used in the that thread it found all types of files.

Did you seek guidance on Macrium forum?

I tried to join macrium forums and it for some reason is struggling to let me log in.. I think I get a pretty clear picture to steer away from macrium..

What is another file image backup program that is very good ? acronis? Maybe I should start using them for my imaging and backups..

I found my files using testdisk 7.2 and Qphotorec.exe

So i have my files, but what a joke from just trying to clone a HDD to a SSD using macrium and for it to make my original HDD unallocated like that in the picture I showed you..

I have windows 10 installed, got my files, but Now I am scared to use macrium again..

So I guess I should move over to acronis for my images of my system now? Would you recommend acronis or that you know for a complete full system image backup that I can put back on later using USB recovery etc..?

    thanks..

I use and recommend Macrium every where.

Agree it should never have done what it did. The disk error likely threw it for a loop.

I am backup crazy. I always backup before I do anything. Whether it is the program or me or my machine, stuff happens. I took an SSD out of a machine once, perfectly good SSD, it never worked again.

    Glad you got files back.

There is another recent thread and he was using Acronis, it gaffed and he is now looking for an alternative. LOL
