    Macrium Reflect

    4-17-2020

Most likely this is in the wrong forum - sorry if it is.
Stats: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
    Google Chrome

    Subject: Macrium Reflect
I have just finished installing Windows 10 Pro 64 bit AGAIN.
I was running a program after installing Macrium Reflect
    and the Recovery CD.
Suddenly the screen went black. The recovery cd was useless.
I have spent days recovering Windows 10 Pro and am reluctant
to add and test Macrium Reflect again.
The blank screen was NOT caused by a power failure.
I desperately need to back up my computer with a reliable
    backup system.
I must be able to recover with Macrium Reflect if the computer
    won't boot.

You guys on this forum swear by Macruim Reflect but I have had
    nothing but problems with it.
All I want to do with Macrium Reflect is a full image backup
and be able to restore windows 10 at disaster time.

I will be most happy to supply any helpful info that I left out.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi, naturally at this point it's impossible to get any data as to why your system apparently crashed as it seems you have reinstalled it.

I have spent days recovering Windows 10 Pro
This worries me. Here's how I start installing Windows and ensuring I don't end up wasting a huge amount of time shoudl something go wrong.

    a. Clean install Win 10 and create a user
    b. At the earliest opportunity, install M reflect and create my first image (i.e. before installing progs and configuring things).
At this point I create a M Reflect definition file specifying the number of items to be retained and where the image files are located.
    c. start recording changes as I make them in a simple log.
    d. create a differential image using the M Reflect task created in (b)
    e. Repeat (c) (d) until there's a feature update (upgrade), before which I create my last differential image.
    f. After the upgrade, start from (b) again with a new image set.

It sounds like you have spent a great deal of time, and have no disk images to protect yourself.

I was running a program after installing Macrium Reflect and the Recovery CD.
    - I guess you mean you created the MR boot disk.

Note that if you felt you had to avoid installing MR, you could do all your imaging using the boot disk. It would just be more time consuming, and you wouldn't have a backup definition file - a whole lot less convenient.

How old is your PC? What model? Have you done any checks on disk or RAM? The screen res. suggests it's an older model, but it seems to be a desktop. (Compare specs shown in My computers below my post).

What program were you running ?

Why were you running the recovery CD after just installing Windows 10 ?

What method did use to, install Windows 10 ?

    Thanks guys for helping.
To dalchina: I don't understand "a". Do you mean that you create the
    recovery CD at this point?
I have never used the differential portion of Macrium Reflect.
My computer shows a different start up page than the one you show here.
    My habits from using Clonezilla-live.

To idgat: to long ago to remember what program I was running.
No - I created it at that time.
Loaded it off a 2G stick from the company that locally made my
    computer (in 7- 2017)
Two Kingston SSDs: 1 for Windows 10 and another for everything else.
1st time I ever tried to install windows 10 64-bit

So now I have to down load Macrium Reflect & install it.
Then create the recovery CD. Then do a full image of the two
    ssd's.

    a. is nothing whatsoever to do with MR.

Imagine you have a blank disk in your PC. Clean install Win 10 by using e,g, a bootable Win 10 installation flash drive to boot the PC and install Windows for the first time and create a user account.

I have never used the differential portion of Macrium Reflect.
Doesn't sound as if you want to know why, what it is, how that saves time and space.

Google can help. You don't have to create a full image each and every time. (The paid version also allows incremental imaging and another form too). All imaging programs I know of provide both differential and incremental imaging.

Using the backup task you have created allows MR to manage your backup files for you.

Sorry, I've reverted to the wording I used in a previous post 'and create a user account' - because that's part of the sequence of the clean installation. (See tutorial:
    Clean Install Windows 10
    Step 22)

    Thanks guys for your help.
I might have just what might be a good backup of windows 10.
Of course I'll never know until disaster strikes.

You'd be better off to create a recovery USB stick rather than a CD if at all possible. A 1 GB stick is big enough.

    Clarify:

Win 10 on 1 SSD and "everything else" on another SSD. Do you specifically mean that applications (including Macrium) are NOT on the same SSD as Windows?

Is it your intention to make ONE image file that represents BOTH SSDs? Is your personal data on this second SSD?

You certainly don't have to use differentials while learning Macrium. You should be able to make a full image in a dozen mouse clicks, purely using defaults. Worry about scheduling, differentials, etc later.

No Macrium is on the same SSD as Windows.
    Personnel data on 2nd ssd.
