First time I need to use Macrium restore image questions.

Hello, so I need to restore an image since I try to update from 1809 to 1909 and it failed twice for me. Now while my system isn't unstable there are some Oddities and just figure it's probably best to restore to a previous image that I did yesterday before attempting to update.

My question is that when I restore my system image from yesterday will I lose anything? Another question is that my windows folder for some reason after the two failed upgrades in now in all caps , is that bad? When I do the image restore will it fix that?

Also one more thing when I do try to update again should I just download the 1903 ISO with heidoc and upgrade to that instead of 1909 and if I do should I disconnect from the internet while its updating?

Yes, any files, user documents or software that were created or installed after the image was made.

Macrium restores the system exactly as it was when you made the image, and none of the above existed back then.

If you want to upgrade to 1903 then Heidoc is the only way to get the ISO from Microsoft's download servers. Even though it's available from their servers MS don't provide any way to find it.

Yes, it's safest (and certainly faster) to disconnect and not to check for updates while upgrading. You can always check for updates once you have a working system.

And, if you are installing the Home Edition, then having the internet disconnected will allow you to bypass the requirement to log in with a Microsoft Account, allowing you to use a Local Account instead - if that is your preference.

Might also help to understand why 1909 failed.

    Any error codes?

Any third party AV's or other tools actively being used, privacy, telemetry blockers?

You have lots of free space?

I just got the standard Windows failed to update to 1909 under security and maintenance. The only antivirus I use is Windows Defender and before I installed I had 442 gigabytes of storage left on my main SSD.

Maybe, just maybe setupdiag will give you more information.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/win...rade/setupdiag

I have mixed feelings on its abilities but a quick run can't hurt.

SetupDiag strikes again. Your error code gives

    From here

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/win...res#0xc1900101

Not sure what your next steps you are planning.

I think I would audit my installed apps killing any and all that I don't use. I would then run an inplace repair with 1809 boot media.

Is SFC /scannow or dism reporting any corruption?

I did that last month on January 18th

    Delete Windows BT file

Also yeah I ran SFC and did repairs last night after my image recovered.

    and the program clean up?

Are you going to try the 1903 step?

Given your machine has been failing on several attempts I think just doing the updates won't change anything. Of course that is one man's opinion.

Have you tried the Windows Update reset?

Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

Given you have and can successfully restore with Macrium you can be creative.
