I've run Macrium from the media in the past and haven't noticed a time difference. I didn't time it or anything, but it wasn't the night and day difference you are hoping for.
How big are the hard drives that you are backing up. And how much data is on them? On my son's system, he has 2 drives. Both 1TB. The first is his OS drive, his apps and his data files. The second drive is basically for games. When we take system images, we typically only backup the 1st drive. It's only the first drive that we need for booting, it's the one most likely impacted by updates, etc. We can restore the 1st drive, and everything on the second remains the same and available. If anything where to happen to the 2nd drive, it just means re-installing a game again...which isn't the end of the world.
If you are backing up a very large amount of data, and then doing it through USB 2.0 speeds, you certainly will see a much slower result than many here.
When you are backing up via Macrium, approximately how fast does it say it's going (in the bottom of the screen). I usually see about 1GB/s, as it's backing up via USB 3 and also managing good compression on the OS drive. My USB 3 drive typically gives me a solid 110MB/sec throughput. USB 2 for me is around 30, so almost 4 times slower.
