    Help with a very bad VSS issue. Cannot find answer anywhere

    Hi, so i have been trying to create a back up and restore on windows 10 home. I am about to do some major modifications to my PC and would like to be safe about it. Every time I try and create a backup through the control panel or through settings I get an error. So i followed this error down a rabbit hole that just leads to more errors. And ive tried literally every thing i have found online to no avail. The first error I get when the backup fails is

    Looks good, so vssadmin list providers is
    Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
    Provider type: System
    Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
    Version: 1.0.0.7

    when i ask it to list volumes, shadows, and shadow storage it says nothing is found.

    I have run SFC /scannow and it came back clean. I have run DISM and it came back clean. I have run chkdsk and it came back clean. So im at a loss here. I have a boot cd or two. but i kinda would like my backup and restore functioning properly as well. Oh and ive tried disabling anti virus and windows defender and rebooting. So please if anyone can shed some light thatd be awesome, thank you!

    If you need to make a backup you could use Macrium Free. Make a USB Rescue stick and use it to boot the PC and then make a backup. Since Windows isn’t running it will not use VSS. While it won’t necessarily fix the VSS issue it will let you make a backup. Macrium also has a Fix VSS function and I believe it’s under Other Tasks menu item. It might help you resolve this issue.

    im supposed to be getting my new SSD today. So i downloaded Acronis in preperation. But it was a random choice. Im curious about the VSS repair tool in macrium though. i'll delete acronis and check it out, Thank you. But if theres anyone else that may have an answer to this issue please feel free. I just noticed another error. It says I dont have enough free space on the drive im copying. But I have 801GB of 919GB free. So surely that cant be the case. I'm already extremely OCD about what I have installed and running, So much so i end up breaking my PC (like so). I'll let ya guys know if the VSS fix in macrium works, thanks!

    I think VSS and Macrium Reflect, and almost all other backup/restore utilities, need sufficient free space to concoct and use respective "work desks". I don't know how much free space each needs though. Also AOMEI Backupper, EaseUS Todo, are just two other utilities one can download, install, and use. Personally, I use both MR7 and Image for Windows 3.xx, making dual C partition backups and one D partition backup onto external media weekly or bi-monthly on the average.

    Creating a system image with Backup & Restore has been a deprecated feature for more than three years now. Even Microsoft say you should use something (anything) else.

    We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

    I use Macrium and find it completely reliable.

    Oh really, I didnt know that. So i'm ok just ignoring these errors in the log? As long as i'm backing up with another program obviously. I was also thinking maybe Acronis was interfering with VSS somehow. It installled a lot of crap. I think there were around 6 different processes or services set for auto run on startup without my permission. There was a good 4 or 5 programs at least installed with it too. That kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Seems like everyone here chooses macrium over acronis mostly. Is it worth it to pay for it or should I not? I'm not doing a lot of cloning or anything. Mostly just gaming and a little code here and there, Thanks guys!

    You can use, for a long time, free versions of Macrium Reflect, AOMEI Backupper, EaseUS Todo..., and so many others. There are many pay-fors also, however, you can get by with free for now.

    Several years ago I used Acronis. After several failures of Acronis to restore backups, I decided to try Macrium and I discovered that the installation of Acronis had damaged the functioning of VSS and Macrium could not utilize VSS. After much difficulty and several registry edits, I was able to restore the operation of VSS and get Macrium working. It wasn’t easy. That was the last time I used Acronis. So yes, I believe that because Acronis installs several low level services that of can interfere with VSS and they can be difficult to remove. As I remember I posted a thread here about my experiences. If your interested I can find it for you.

    What I don't get those is macrium is almost a TB and Acronis is like 700GB. But when I installed acronis I don't even think I saw more then one or two GB difference in my total space used. What's up with that?surely macrium isn't going to take up 900GB of space right?
