    Volume Shadow Services & System Restore Points

    I notices that my "Volume Shadow Services"is set to "manual" mode.

    Is it suppose to be set to "automatic" mode?

    Could the fact that it it set to "manual" mode be the reason I'm loosing System Restore Points even though I have 95 GB of storage set aside for these SR points?

    I have Windows 10 Pro, version 1909.

    I'm using Pro 1909 and that service on mine is set to manual, I haven't altered it since install. To be honest though I do not use restore points, I have found them to sometimes be flaky at best and a new feature (build of Windows) will probably delete them to prevent older file versions causing issues. If you use Macrium or a similar imaging application on a regular basis you are probably better protected from screw ups, yours or software developers.

    Macrium also uses VSS to create online (live) images. In this computer it appears as "stopped".

    By default, it is set to Manual so whenever this service is needed it will kick off.
    For example, Every time a system restore point is created, you will have a valid shadow copy created also.
    Volume Shadow copy is also used by Windows Backup/Restore or by third party software such as Macrium etc...

    @DanMcD

    Do you have Acronis backup installed? That seems to cause problems with system restore points.

    Yes and it should be triggered start when you create a system restore point. If restore point fails to create then the problem is somewhere else.
    FYI, System Restore is not really reliable, resource hog and often corrupted. You should use backup software such as Macrium, AOEMI backupper etc...
    to backup your Windows.

    Where did you find that the VSS is set to manual ?

    2- Does the VSS takes another copy and exploit HDD space or just updated the previous VSS ?

    Thanks
