I have not yet instituted an "entire drive" backup solution, yet.
As I first started to customize/configure my new pc only 3 weeks ago, I hoped that luck would prevail against needing that solution so soon. However I do know that time may not be on my side and do need that solution. It was while I was learning this "new to me" OS - that I saw my old "tried and true" Win7 system image option (which worked well for me in the past) was no longer recommended by Microsoft or others from this forum.
My immediate issues with SR points sidetracked me - but I'll be looking at MR or Acronis.
In the meantime, my "documents", desktop, and users>appdata>roaming folders and files are being backed up "continuously" using "Carbonite Safe" - which I transferred from my older Win7 pc. I'm also learning about the built in "File History" backup feature in Win10 and would like to use that as well. Redundant yes, but I do enjoy learning.
Oops - sorry, I should have realized you were asking that question of Terrypin, not me.

I use MR to make a full image of my OS SSD drive C: every week. No differentials or incremental (although I’m considering those).
And I use Second Copy to do a conventional daily and weekly backup of just about everything on C: (256 GB) and D: (4 TB).

SR is one of the first tools I turn to when I have problems that defy quick fixes.

Out of curiosity, did your Restore Point issues happen after a Macrium update? And is your issue the same as mine - restore points are missing and you get this error...

I've had that message but more often I see just one SR point displayed when there should be more.

Then you have a completely different issue from what I had, since at least the system is (I assume) creating a Restore Point for you. BTW is it a "System" created Restore Point???

Looking at the reply, there I'd say follow that thread and go from there. For the record, the only time use Macrium is when I need to create a "just in case" disk image. In fact it's the only time I run the program. For my normal backup needs I use Acronis.

Edit: Something I didn't see jphughan (Macrium forum) mention is increasing the space System Restore uses... under Protection settings click "Configure" and increase "Disk Space Usage" from what you currently have to a few more percentage points - If at 3 increase to 5 or 7. The create a couple of Restore Points and see how that goes for a couple of days.

Thank you Terrypin - yes, I did see it since I've thankfully subscribed to that thread and got the email notification.

I've always been wary of registry edits, though I done it in the past. Without possibly me having a saved restore point to fall back on (which is what this is really all about-lol), I hesitate to do it if I find I can't restore the original registry entries.

I was going to wait for your latest reply after you've concluded your experiment to see if your "manually" created restore points are saved - if your reply back with success, then I'd take the plunge.

It's great that you provided the link with the instructions you're using so I can follow them.
(Back in a Win7 forum there was a post from a fellow who wrote a script that could be run and imported into task scheduler that did it for my Win7 pc which had stopped creating automatic restore points - I still have the instructions along with that VBS script in case anyone should be interested).

Unfortunately my issue is still unresolved after several attempts by Microsoft which lastly included an in-place OS repair/upgrade from ver. 1903 to 1909.
The only remaining steps I haven't done yet is either to do a factory reset or a "clean reinstall" of Win10 - which I downloaded from MS and saved to a flash drive.
My new Dell PC is still under the 30 day no hassle return/exchange policy - today's the last day.

Either a reset/clean re-install or a return/exchange for a new one is for me a radical step.

My question to anyone who would like to give me their advice is:
since this whole issue of System Restore being trouble prone/unreliable/buggy - should I even consider either of the above steps?
Or since so many members of this forum have this problem and some advise against even trusting/using SR - should I just let it go and learn to live without relying on SR?

If anyone would like to give me their opinion, I'd appreciate it. I'm tired of banging my head against the wall with this.

Personally even if you did all the things above doesn't mean there's a guarantee this issue would be solved. In that vein, I might just leave the OS as is.

For me, even though my system restore points still disappear after about a week at least the OS still automatically creates one, and I still have to option of manually creating one when needed. With that I'm leaving things as Is and moving on.

I think you might want to do the same.
