    Cloning old drive before installing new drive


    Could you point me in the right direction please ?
    I have a 120g SSD which I need to replace so I need to clone it so as to re-assign the content to the Adata M.2, PCIe target disc, the slot which is currently held by the 120g will be disabled when I connect the M.2 yet it says connect your new disc before cloning as stated the source slot will not ne enabled.
    Will the partitions need to be removed as I don't really want partitions on the new drive?

    It's not clear what the problem is what make is the new drive? Often makers of the drive provide a clone tool and normally you would install both drives boot from the clone software and copy all partitions

    Hi.
    The target drive is an Adata XPG sx8200 pro 2tb m.2-2280 NVMe PCIe SSD.
    Motherboard is an Asus Z170.
    Source for cloning is , SATA port 1
    *1:When the M.2 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will be disabled.
    *2:These functions will work depending on the CPU installed.

    It only kills sata 1 port so you should be able to use the disk on another port. That only happens if you use sata mode not pcie mode

    Not au fait inside a computer..
    Would I achieve a result using an enclosure for the M.2 through a USB port?

    I would make an Image of 120 GB SSD to external drive, install new SSD and restore image to it. Macrium free if fine for this.

    What partitions do you have on the current SSD? Usually, there are recovery, UEFI and system. 120 GB is pretty small size to have additional data partition.

    In Macrium you can select partitions necessary to boot - this will give you minimal set

    Healthy (OEM Partition) Healthy (EFI System) Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

    In Macrium you can select partitions necessary to boot - this will give you minimal set " I am lost with this lol"

    Yes. 👍
    I always image the entire operating system drive. This means imaging all partitions which will give you virtually a replica of your old drive.

    you don't have additional data partition. Image all your drive, restore it to new one, expand C: partition to your desire, and you're done
