Restoring system images on GPT systems

I've just finished converting my spare Win 10 laptop from MBR to GPT using MBR2GPT in Win 10. As far as I can see on a first boot it seems to have worked ok so I'm creating a new system image in MR right now. How do you restore images in GPT when the Secure Boot feature in UEFI won't allow you to use your MR boot disk?

Are you unable to disable secure boot?

Iggy's question is most likely your answer. Secure Boot will prevent anything external from booting. Related thread and post just recently. Take a look.

Thanks guys. I realise I could go into UEFI/BIOS and disable secure boot, and re-enable it when finished but this seems such an inelegant way of dealing with the problem. I'm looking at what I'm offered by MR if I ask the installed program to restore my image, and it's telling me I can add a menu option to MR to automatically boot into Windows PE and restore from there. That sounds better but would that also get blocked by secure boot?

No, it would not get blocked because you're booting from within Windows, just like a restart. Works well. But....if the drive takes a nose dive, you'll need that thumb drive. Long as you know you have to disable Secure Boot to use it, you're ok.

Ok, thanks for that, I'll give it a whirl.

That has worked at the third try. First two hung during reboot. Probably my system.

That has addressed my main concern with converting from MBR to GPT but I also use other boot utilities such as Partition Wizard , booting their ISO with EasyBCD. UEFI spells an end to all that - wish I could convince myself its worth having, BIOS and MBR are so easy.

It is not compulsory to use secure boot in a UEFI/GPT system. You could leave it turned off and Windows will still boot fine. I don't enable it on any of my UEFI/GPT systems.

TBH I just did it so as to have a better understanding of it first hand rather than thinking it a necessity. I will keep it and use it for a while and decide on its future later. As a first impression I'm quite impressed by the speed improvement on this 6 year old Thinkpad E335, especially when booting and I will probably add a couple of additional partitions.

I would expect those improvements would be down to UEFI/GPT, not secure boot. You should retain them with or without secure boot enabled.

I don't keep it (Secure Boot) enabled either. I run UEFI/GPT. It's the environment, really, that determines keeping it on/off. Not likely Harry Hacker is going to stroll into my home office and pop a flash drive into my Desktop. You'll have to decide. You'll end up keeping the GPT, especially if as you say, you're going to add some more partitions.
