    Hi folks
OK not the answer to the OP's question - but considering time spent and complexity of the problem I really question why the OP has decided not to use excellent free software that exists out there for backup e.g free macrium (or others - free macrium is used by many here , is liked and is reliable).

A Windows backup even on slowish disks shouldn't take more than 30 mins at the most.

If the OP doesn't want to install backup software on his system the perfectly good bootable restore version can boot from USB device etc -- and can also do a "Bare Metal" restore if required.

I've been though the whole thread and can't really understand the OP's reluctance to use sensible backup software - especially as its free, reliable and can be run from a bootable usb / cd.

BTW if V.S.S is a problem in using backup software when running it while on Windows the chances are that there isn't enough free space for temporary storage use on any HDD / SSD in the system that the backup wants to use - V.S.S locks the system (the OS) partition while backing up in case the user is making changes while backing up -- not a good idea in any case.

The stand alone bootable versions of these backup programs don't use V.S.S if that's a problem.

    Cheers

If the poster actually read the "OP's" posts they'd understand the "OP" is keenly aware Restore Points are not designed to be backups; and that the OP already uses a backup program.

BTW, the poster might learn that even "Macrium" users are having issues with Restore Points. Perhaps the poster might take the time to learn what restore points are and how they work?

    Hi there

    OK we all make mistakes

it's just in my experience of working with all sorts of systems whether Windows, Linux or even the old IBM Mainframe type of systems -- e.g MVS/ESA or MVS/390 that taking a basic stand alone bootable backup (yes that was even possible on old huge Mainframe systems too !!) that restoring the system to a previous working version fixed all these sorts of problems.

Now if people need the Windows restore points for other things then "I defer to their solutions and reasons".

There's no "One size fits all" situations here -- so all most of us do is try and suggest what we feel are the most appropriate solutions. If these don't work or are aren't appropriate Then -- "Please don't shoot the Messenger".

Just look at the COVID-19 situation around the planet -- so many different Gov'ts are trying things -- some with more success than others but no one has come up with a decent solution that even is 75% successful yet.

No flaming intended but just trying to inject a bit of realism here. If the proposed suggestion is no good or in appropriate -- fine -- post and we can all learn and benefit from the experience of others.

    Cheers
